I just got Ableton and it seems ok (though the midi editing sucks). But I still have a few questions:
1. How do you create an efx group?
2. How do you use send efx?
3. How do you automate bpm?
4. I can write MIDI notes in a MIDI channel but I can't get them into the arangement window, nothing happens...
If any of you have some more info on these questions or other tips/god tutorials on ableton, plz post and plz no rtfm's, it's just quicker this way.
thanks |

1. If you select "insert return track" you'll get an fx-group
2. Select "Sends" & "Returns" in view.
3. Haven't tried that yet....
4. How do you write notes in ? I can only record them with a keyboard, don't see no pencil-tool anywhere....
Good luck.... |

4. To write midi notes in, you need to double click on an empty midi clip. Those are found in the midi channel. That should pull up the midi clip in the bottom screen area. Then click on the pencil tool found in the transport looking section in the very top center of the screen. You can then write in the box that is found near the bottom right corner of the screen in the midi clip area.
3. Not sure exactly how to automate the bpm, but I am certain you should be able to automate that too.... Otherwise you can record you automating the tempo change yourself.

Thanks for the replies... I can write midi notes in a 'pattern' but I can't play them (in the arrangement section. I'm starting to get doubts about wether I would use this program for actualy builing songs. Seems more suitable for plaing live only with a vsti playing on top of rendered wavs... Still not happy about the midi editing... call me crazy but I still prefer FL. But for playing live this seems better. |

Indeed Jeto! Very confusing program!
But I found out how to make tracks playing faster!
First create an audio track, then load the wav file on it(like in Cubase/Logic). Then double click on the wav track. At the botton of the window u will see a "sample window" that will show u full wav. Press the "loop" button and write the original bpm of the track. Now u only need to change the master tempo of Ableton(at the trasnport). I really donīt know if itīs right, but thatīs the only way I can listen my tracks on faster/slower tempo.
Now I also have some doubts:
1)I have a track on 140 and other on 142. I want to play both on 144, and make a short beat mix. How to do this? First is playing both tracks at same bpm, and then make the perfect beat match.
2)Now I want to have a snare loop to play it live(sometimes I let it mute, sometimes not letīs say). How to do this??? Do I have to make "loop track" going from beggining to the end of the live?? Or is there a option make a track play the loop in loop mode and at same time the rest playing not on loop mode?
@bandarlog: are u routing any sound generator to the midi track? And imho u are right. I think this is not the best program to make music.

SMS.....reply on your second Q...
If you make a "scene" with the sample you want in "loop" mode in the editor, and the others not in "loop" mode...does this answer your question ?

Ok... Ableton really isn't that confusing if you bother to either read the manual or take the tutorials that happen to come with live. If you take about 20-30 minutes out of your day, you can learn it easily. But to keep everyone from being confused, I will drop some knowledge on ya.
SMS-
1.) Once you have dragged the wav. files into the arrangement, double click on it. In the warp box there should be a bpm counter on it. Click on it and enter the original bpm of the wav file. From there, all you need to do is move the wav files to where the beats match up. (The warp must be hilighted to make this work.) [this was the main selling point from live 3]
2.) Ok... this shouldn't be too big of an issue. Either the snare loop is audio, or you have it as a midi clip. If it's an audio clip, you can drag the clip from the file browser area directly into the arrangement screen. You can drag the right corner of the audio file and if it is selected to loop, it will loop for you. If you want that file to come in every now and then you can either drag a new version of the audio clip into the arrangement screen, or you can split the looped clip in places that you don't want the loop to play. If you drag a new audio clip into the arrangement screen, you can just copy the audio clip and place it whereever you want it.
Now if the snare loop is a midi file with a vst attached to it, you will have to drag the midi clip from the session view (the view with the mixer) into the arrangement view. To do that, just click and drag the clip up to the very top of the screen, that will automatically take you to the arrangement area and you can place it wherever you want.
Bandarlog... I have already answered your questions for you, so hopefully that should help. By the way, I just got ableton 3 days ago and I have already figured all this out.
Personally, I am working on my first track solely in Ableton Live... It's not as easy to use as Logic, but that is probably because I am used to using Logic.
When any new software comes out, people will find it difficult to use, but as the update keep coming out and the creators listen to more feedback, they will make it easier for us to use. When I first started using Logic, I couldn't figure it out. It took me 4 months just to make the program work. It only took me 3 days to figure out Ableton and for me that's good. I think once people start using it more, they will discover how powerful of a tool this program can be.

i find ableton extremely easy.
ableton doesn't 'import' wav files, you keep al your audio files in a few select folders and tell it which ones, just like the vst folder, and then its just a matter of dragging them from the browser window...
? confusing?

ableton live ist very symple.......
sorry for logic user.....
i work with : cubase ,protool, ableton live, logic, max msp, peak, spark.
the more symple for make songs (when you have sounds/loop) is ABLETON LIVE.
i made a few soundtracks, cd & live act with this program.
for shure for psy-trance the best is LOGIC.
