well elastic plastic,,, if u have a vague idea for production on ableton then just use the same method to record a dj set,,,, its actually really easy.... just load up the tracks, mix it down with the recording on.... voiląaaa there you gooo .u really dont even need sound cards ..warping and looping is also a piece of cakeeee....you'll see it right there when you double click tracks once their loaded up in their slots....bom bom

A few tips for djing with Live;
DONT USE THE NATIVE 3 BAND EQ. Theres a good free vst just called 'DJ EQ' that has the same parameters as the native 3 band without altering the sound like the native.
Try to find good effects that let the sound through cleanly when deactivated, and don't cause the audio to cut out before becoming active. Lots of teh native effects do that. I recommend just getting some good single-fx plugs and making your own chains.
I usually set up dj sets just the same as CDJ setups, with an effect rack wiht nice chains on the master, 3 band EQs and usually 2 main channels.
When warping make sure to set the initial marker as close as you can to the beginning of a pattern or measure, if its off, Live won't be able to properly sync it right on-beat.
If you're not using it for anything else, you might want to consider a dedicated Live dj controller like the Faderfox one, I use my microKONTROL but its not as sturdy as I would like and doesn't really allow fast smooth control like a hardware mixer, I broke a couple faders getting a bit too into a mix, they're really not meant for that...
If you know how to mix with hardware, its pretty much the same idea; 2 audio channels, 3 band EQs, and a handy German Beatmatching Robot to do the dirty work while you rock out ;P
I can share a screenshot of one of my dj sets so you can get a better idea . |

Just a general outline of basic 2 channel mixing setup
If you want also I can throw together a warping guide for version 8 as well as 7 (I only recently finally gave up using 7, I was one of those grumbling frustrated 8-warp-haters, it was quite a paradigm shift after years using 6 and 7 that really rubbed me the wrong way when 8 first came out)

Macprovideo have tutorials on this matter,I am absolutely sure.
I have some tutorials from them,its a mix of explaining how to produce and DJ in live.I think there are more focused tutorials on DJing on their site,those are not bad at all.
From all the things I lost,that sandwitch cost me most :)

I finally got around to making a basic dj setup walk through, if you ccan try it out and let me know if I missed anything, or theres anything you don't understand, Id be grateful. Its a first draft, but I think I covered the basics.
I didnt cover any of the general basic ideas of using Ableton, its intended for those who arleady have a basic idea of the interface, as well as a basic idea of dj mixing, but if you need tips for either of those concepts I can help, I spent about 4 years mixing with hardware, using Live for production and live setup before I even considered it a possibility, and for the past 2 or so years Ive been using it entirely for mixing, so Im fairly confident that I know what Im doing, so feel free to ask, if I cant answer I probably know someone who can
Heres the tutorial in pdf, if you want the Open Office original its on the same site, jsut erase the filename

Lol, I discovered something that is kinda important, that I just learned myself. Ive been using Live 7 til a couple months ago, because of this very reason; Live 8's default warp setting alters the audio, pretty drastically, and when I started using 8 when it first came out, I couldn't figure out wtf was going on that messed up the sound so bad, and for some reason it took me abotu a month-ish after going back to 8 to figure it out...
In 7, the warp was simple, 2 warp markers, bang, done, the default setting didn't alter the sound at all.
In 8 they got a bit clever. The manual taht i didnt read when 8 came out has the details, check it out, but if you just want the audio file unfutzed;
After warping, as my tutorial describes, check in teh warp settings panel, you should see a dropdown that says, 'Beats' or 'Complex' or something. The one that I find pretty much leaves the sound alone is
Texture
Set the grain setting low, you might hear distortion if its all the way down, generally 10-20 works for my stuff. The second setting I turn all the way off, at 0.
Thats just my preference, 8 lets each dj choose how the audio behaves for themselves, so check the manual if Texture and these settings arent quite good in your ears.
