Just started working with Ableton Live 5, with a strong view to use it for re-arranging my music live behind the decks with it.
i think it can really transform our way of thinking of DJing. Why should I just press play to play a track and that's it? In Ableton i can leave all the parts of my track separate, and arrange them live using a midi keyboard controling the different clips and effects and parts of the track, so its the same track, but also different every time. Every time I play live I can choose again when to drop the bass, when to add that funny movie sample... what effects to put on my lead.
Is there anyone out there using Ableton Live for making/ playing live psytrance with??? |

I d like to understand the main advantages of ableton live. I know that lots and lots of people use it for psytrance live acts and everyone tells me that there s no beter software to play live. Can anyone tell me why? I have cubase sx and I d like some one to give me real and practical situations where ableton live makes a real difference on making the live act an easier job...

for example ...
if you put a new inserteffect on a track in cubase, you have a short time where the music stops. you don't have this problem with ableton. |

I don't think it makes the live act an easier job, it makes it simply much more alive.
For example, you might like to put you different leads into separate clips, and link the 'play' for each clip to a note on your keyboard, and than when you play live, you can bring new lead parts into the mix simply by pressing a key. You can do much more as well. You have a function on it that allows you to make sure than regasless when you press the key, the part will only come into the mix in the right moment beat-wise, so you will always be in sinc. I have some tracks divided to 15 different parts (bass lead kick samples and so on), and playing live i trigger them on the spot in accordance to what i feel like on that momnet. Also at home I can do than, and recored my actions into the arrangment view, and therefor get my tracks going not just by computer programing, but with a real live feel, as i dance around the room and: BOOM drop the bass in.... leter I can edit and clean it up in the arangment view as well.
Its also great for droping samples into the mix, as they will always be on the right BPM and the be droped live, but still in perfect match to the track. Also its very easy to drop in live played lookps from my guitar or synths, and they immidiatly fit into the mix as well. |

The main difference is that a live set with a cubase simply can be a real live set.
U just can edit waves and load plugins on the fly.You cant assign midi controller whil you are playing a track without audible clicks and slowing down of teh music.
You can do all the above with live.
I personally dont like composing with Live tho. |

i agree. altough some people use ableton for producing, i prefer cubase sx by far. but for live performances i dont think theres a beter soft than ableton because mainly because the auto timestretching, and stability, u can practically do anything without affecting the outcoming audio, and its a lot of fun!!!!

I love it for playing live too, if for no other reason than I can slow down or speed up the BPMs at will, plus all the other advantages listed above. As for the music making end of things, food for thought, I read a post from Ott on a different forum (I believe it was the UK one) and Ott said he's writting his new album in Live 5.

I know many people using live for writing music.
Pete Namlook among those.
Personally,I prefer LOgic or Protools.
Neuromyth I would be carefully stating such things ;-) |

we/I use ableton live for liveacts AND djing.
it offers possibilities for both no other system ever had.
some real djs say, thats not "Djing". i say: wake up! if you can make a loop function with the standart-decks we can talk again. and this is just the beginning. steve bug just released a mix-cd completely mixed digitally on the notebook (hehe next weekend i gonna see him live)

Kind of want SMS said, but it goes Options -> Edit Midi Map (or just hit "Ctrl M") -> click the knob or button you want to control in Live -> turn or push the knob or button on your controller when you are down hit Ctrl M or Edit Midi map again to turn off the editting window and you are good to go.

i love live!!!! and it's what i use for my midi programming it flows much easier than cubase... for example if u fucked up recording your midi u just hit control Z and it erases not like cubase that u have to stop and then hit control z plus u can asssign super fast to ya controllers...
i program in live then record to my other computer the audio also running live.. both sync together then i export all the audio fiiles to cubase where i add eq and all that good stuff!!! then i master it in wavelab or sound forge both are good...
but for editing waves i love adobe audition its the best !!!!
live is awesome and easy to work with i love the session view the arragement view is kinda weak compare to cubase though mainly i work in session... peace out mate if you got any questions regarding live feel free and holla on the boards or pm me peace!!! u can also hit me up at abletongeek@AOL.COM |
