Newer cpu´s execute 64bit code more efficiently so a little extra performance can be had once everybody is on the same train of thought (and development cycle) For almost all major apps it´s still in it´s infancy and if you use plugs made by coders with limited ressources you may have to wait even more. So what other advantages are there for musicians? well for one addressing huge amounts of memory (4 gigs really should be plenty though, cut down on plugs with great looking interfaces) Soundwise most computations in modern sequencers are done in 32bit float even if they are badged as 64 bit apps. You see calculating everything with 64bit precision would put too much of a strain on your computers resources. For now it is done in certain cases where it is advantageous but in almost all cases the 24bits (plus 6 bits for other stuff and headroom)is more than capable of going beyond the limits of our hearing.

The omnisphere in particular is a heavy one whichever way you turn it and i would only ever run one at a time to avoid issues.           Mastering available here:

I am using reaper 64 bits and it runs very very good and has excellent support for 32 bits plug ins.

more than 4 gigs of ram are usefull for romplers.           "The dedication to repetition — the search for nirvana in a single held tone or an endlessly cycling rhythm — is one of electronic music's noblest gestures."

There are much more efficient ways of generating white noise...

I just switched from Win7 32bit to Win7 64-bit. In Win7 32-bit every program is limited to max. 2GB of memory regardless of how much you have installed. In practice I noticed that it is 1700MB in my case, I don't know why it does not reach 2GB.

Ableton Live 8 is a 32-bit application but if you run it in Windows 7 64-bit, Live is able to use memory up to 4GB (in Win7-32, the upper 2GB is reserved for OS but in Win7-64 the OS can move itself to higher address space and give the whole 32-bit (4GB) memory to Live or other applications). To me Live seems more stable in Win7-64 although it is still a buggy, slow and unstable program when you have loads of VSTs in a project.

As I have understood, currently Ableton Live does NOT support any 64-bit plugins, even if you have a 64-bit OS. There exists one workaround though, a JBridge plugin that makes 64-bit plugin 32-bit (or vice versa). It also allows you to go around the 2GB limitation in Win7-32bit, but I don't think it is the best solution and I would not rely on it.

buggy, slow and unstable?

Are you running the current version of live?

Sure, it crashes (very) rarely but overall I find it to be quite stable - though I recently slimmed down the amount of different plugs I use as it was getting crazy.

However, I can count on one hand the amount of times that I've had it crash and not be able to recover the data from the undo list in the one and a half years or so I've been using Live.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

Yes I have the latest version. I must say that changing from Win7-32 to Win7-64 has reduced the amount of crashes significantly but still it happens time to time. The most annoying thing is that it takes me on average 40-50 seconds to load a Live project as I have a lot of VST:s there, and the program gets unbelievably slow.

I found out that Live makes a log file in C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Ableton\Live Reports\Temp\live-run-xxx...\ named events.txt and this creates a lot of unneccessary CPU and harddisk activity.

Every time I load a project it creates this events.txt from scratch and logs 85MB of events there!!

To me it seems that Ableton Live 8 is just a piece of crap. Believe me I know what I am talking about, I have been using it almost every day from autumn 2009, I just regret it that it took me this long time to give up and start to move to an alternative. What have they done for repairing it, adding things like Serato Bridge or Max for Live that could be less important in comparison to stable and fast basic operation. I suspect that it is so badly coded that they have calculated it is cheaper to code Live architecture from scratch (and maybe that is the reason why Live 9 is so long due), than repair bugs, and Live8 updates are just cosmetic thing to show customers that something is happening. I just really hope that they would have learned their lesson in Live9. I think it is a good sign that it is due as it means that they are hopefully doing better quality management.
