Im soon getting a new machine with 64 bit win 7 pro and i have a question.

Live supports up to 4 gigs of ram, i have 8 installed in this new machine, does this mean that vsts installed for 64 bit windows will be limited to those 4 gigs of ram when used through ableton?

Thanks in advance guys

Even if they were limited, it still wouldn't change your decision...would it?

at the moment im working with a vaio with 4 gigs of ram, vista 32 bit and intel core 2 duo 2.4 ghz and i cannot open more than 15 tracks with hungry cpu plugs, the processor starts flying everywhere!! so frustrating, and im tired of bouncing audio every two minutes, i feel it makes me limited in my creativity! so thats why im getting a powerful machine, hence my question about live and vsts ram usage.....i do not wish to spend all that money to encounter the same problem you understand?? , i love live, been using it for ages since live 4, but if with this new setup i wont see a major improvement (being able to keep the best vsts open at all time without bouncing to audio every 2 minutes, and using 30 tracks without problems) i will consider changing to a 64 bit compatible daw and wave bye bye to ableton.

processing power is the most important issue imo.. but ram is also important.
for optimum ram use on x64 win7, live and all plugins should be 64bit versions.

beware that are some differences between processors, specially the number of cores and so

here's a chart for intel desktops and laptops. it takes a bit to load..

I seriously doubt that there would be a significant difference between DAWs in terms of how many tracks/vsts each could have open without running into the problems you're describing.

Are you using your plugs/vsts efficiently? Which ones are causing you the most CPU drain?

I remember getting really frustrated with my inability to run multiple instances of a plugin until i figured out that it was multi-timbral and that I was using it improperly

The system I was until yesterday using was similar to yours in terms of specs (though win 7 64 - vista is a pile of shit) and I rarely encounter issues with CPU until the tail end of a project...and I usually have at least 20-40 tracks if not more

i was running on vista 32 bit btw, and my new system will be as follows:

i5 quad core 2.8 ghz
8 gig ram (g-skill)
msi mother board
500 gb x2 HD @ 7200 rpm
high end cooling system, wont go into details but out of all things its the thing that costed the most, i live in a very hot country btw.
windows pro 64 bit

i was using multiple instances of omnisphere and waldorf largo since theyre my 3 fav synths, i get all my sounds from them, god bless software , do you think this setup will show me a substantial difference?

but live still doesnt support 64 bit, so its useless i install 64 bit versions of the plugins cause it wont read them, thats why im so frustrated, and im pretty sure im not the only one.

magner...multiple instances of OMnisphere is the exact thing that I was doing that was causing my system to slow down.

when you want to run two patches of Omni, do you have two different instances of the VST open?

Because..you can run up to 8 separate patches at the same time with one instance. there are tutorials out there for it...you basically create a new audio track and a new midi track for each part of omni and assign them their own midi channel and shit. makes a world of difference.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

I've seen talks of 64 bit support for live 9           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

i used to use omni and the rest of the spectrasonics synths just as you explained above but still my laptop would go bonkers!.

Im happy to confirm that the upgrade to a new machine went down briliantly!, although with live 32 bit (until live 9 comes out the performance is incredible, actualy more than i expected!, windows 7 64 bit works fantasticlay

so true! , i realy cant get it with live, theyre always so innovative in alot of aspects but this 64 bit thing seems to be a big issue for them, other daws and vst plugins have been 64 bit for ages now.....i guess they know that people like us are still going to buy their product in the end no matter what they come up with.

Eh...I wonder how much of a difference 64 bit would actually make. Not saying that I wouldn't like to have it, as I'm sure it would do *something* but as to how much that something would be?

Unless I am really trying to max out my CPU by being wasteful and lazy, I don't run into any problems, even though I'm using quite a lot of plugs and stuff...and I don't have a super computer or anything

But, yes please ableton 64 bit...            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

if they come up with a decent conversion the processing will be much faster supposedely, and live would have access to more juice, ram, 16 gigs of them , and in that case yes we could afford to be wasteful and lazy

It would be pretty funny to absolutely max out a system with those specs...I wonder what a couple hundred different extremely CPU intensive FX units in a single chain would produce            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe
