hi guys, i've a powerbook 1,67 2 gb ram with a motu ultralite and i decided to try ableton 5, i think is great, no problem with vst & au, very easy and intuitive, i've just one question:
is it possible make psytrance just with this program (and reason in rewire) or i need something more prof? Sombody told me that ableton's output is not same quality like cubase or logic, is it true? there are much difference or particular limitation if i decide to work with this program? thanks a lot!

I think its very possible.
Im happy with the program but my partner mixes in Cubase, becoz he prefers it.

U should try live 6 instead. the deep freeze function allows you to rearrange frozen tracks on the fly.(An incredibly useful function)

i think ableton is very good sequencer....for music writing ...
but not for mixing and mastering!

you can start with ableton and after a while move to cubase or logic!           www.myspace.com/aliasix

Dont let people dont dump on live. Increasingly larger amounts of musicians are coming forward saying that live is ALL they need.

this is Y u need to freeze tracks. On a slower machine the more intensive the plugins are the quicker u will run out of cpu cycles.
Either that or buy a faster machine.
However if u freeze your cpu intensive instruments then I dont see any reason Y you couldnt compose 1 track at a time, adding details as u see fit.
There are daw's like cubase which dont run all the cpu intensive instruments unless they are needed, but thats not an option for live play. In the end tho no matter which daw u use, all of them will require just as much cpu if your instruments are active.

i'm afraid at some point freezing your tracks will not free any resources but will overload your hard drive causing audio drops and clips.

the ideal situation is not to overload anything but this is clearly something we cannot avoid as the computers are too slow or we are still to crazy for them. freezing everything can be a tricky thing in most of the systems (normal ata/sata 7200 rpm systems). after some time it overload the hard drive by playing all this uncompressed audio mix downs in real time.

Quote:
Quote from Ableton Live Manual:

The amount of disk traffic Live generates is roughly proportional to the number of audio channels being written or read simultaneously. A track playing a stereo sample causes more disk trafic than a track playing a mono sample.

The Disk Overload indicator flashes when the disk was unable to read or write audio quickly enough. When recording audio, this condition causes a gap in the recorded sample when playing back, you will hear dropouts. Do the following to avoid disk overload:

ˆ Choosing mono inputs instead of stereo inputs in the Audio Preferences’ Channel Conguration dialog.
ˆ Use RAM Mode for selected clips.
ˆ Reduce the number of audio channels by using mono instead of stereo samples.

i think there's a point when you need to start eliminating 'tracks' no matter if they are audio or midi. a good way to do this is to group already flattened audio tracks that you know you wont edit no more. this way, clean audio tracks can be used to hold many lines or parts of your music.

ok guys thanks very very much for your help! So if i understand, everything is ok on my ppc, yes, is not so powerfull i know :-( but the idea to drop on an audio track some vst is right isn't it? i think i'll work in this way but in the future i'll have to change computer...what do you suggest? imac dual core (new) or a switch back to a powerfull toshiba (for example) with window?

@5-ht.. don't buy an imac for music production - difficult to expand the system and loud fan in front of you...

my suggestion...play around with your computer until you're shure you need a bigger and then buy a real nice one..

you don't need anything more...

i write entirely in Live 6. the workflow is excellent, it sounds great imo, and there isn't much that ableton can't do that cubase or logic can do.

i remember Ott saying he mixes stuff down in ableton live... and his music sounds pretty fucking sweet to me

one thing which is worth mentioning is that Live 6 has multi-core and multi-processor support, whereas Live 5 doesn't. enabling multi-core support when using a dual-core machine can give up to 30% more CPU headroom (even more sometimes), which is like getting a new computer!

for instance: my laptop is 2.0ghz core 2 duo with 2g ram. in one project i currently have:

9 x z3ta+
13 x vanguard
4 x ambience

and it runs smoothly...

ok, so, i'm little bit confused and frustrated :'-( i bought this powerbook just for my music dream production, in past i worked with cubase and reason with a very slow pc, i decided to switch to apple but now i think i took the wrong way, or better, the wrong laptop. ok now will work with this but for the future what computer do you suggest (laptop would be better, i know they've much more problems of a desktop...but is more comfortable), mac or window,my budget is more or less 1300 euro, i don't have 2000 for a macbook (macbook p have so many problems now). Thanks a lot guys!

you will probably get more 'bang for your buck' with a windows system...

hey aeon u just got me hyped thats pretty radical how many ur able to run (vst) i know zeta is a big hog on the cpu... i been working on the same computer for the past 3-4 yrs and man zeta would kill live!!!

my computer that suppose to arrive sunday has
duo-core processors runnin 2.13 ghz and 4 gig's of ram so im assuming this set up is gonna rock big time from ur post considerin my processors are a bit faster n 2 more gig's of ram.

u stated that u had all those plugins and ur cpu was runnin smooth... question are u using eq,and other efx processors 3 party plugins aswell in ur track???

i do have my favorite plugins like urs but those are real good with the cpu but my other favorites like GRM dude those kill my computer do u have those and if u do how good are they when runnin with ya set up??

and also are u runnin more applications rewired?

i plan to be runnin reason and fruity loops rewired to live for some major sonic mayhem if ya know what i mean...

it's funny how i got so many better vst's n plugins n i still rock those 2 applications i guess it's reason's malstrom and that cool vocal thingy were u type words in fruity loops and then choose if u want a kid talking or nerd etc or the turntable efx radikal....man those two applications make me feel like i outgrew them but then i find myself later on going back to use some of their features... that are available no where else...

definit keepers

peace people!
