Ableton just died on me...

Ok, so I've been using Ableton 8.1 for a while now....happily and fruitfully, but for some reason today it just....slowed to a screeching halt

currently, it takes 3-4x as long as it normally takes to load up ableton, and in a new set it takes 10x longer to load operator/analog as it usually takes...and even when it does load, I can't get it to produce any sound.

I try to open a live set i've been working on for the past week or so (with no issues at all during that time), and live just sits there for a couple minutes then crashes. Same behavior with all my previous live sets.

every other program that I have works fine, I have made no changes to the configuration of Ableton or that of my computer. I have restarted my machine multiple times.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am currently 'repairing my library' and it looks like that will take QUITE some time...

hey ,

Try to recall what you recently changed in terms of soft- hardware and setup.

Check changes you made in youre audio settings, software updates from ableton, connected progs, vstz.
Did you connect a hardware app?

Perhaps watch the information in the ableton startupscreen, maybe you'll see there what is taking so long?

..or you can do a system restore or reinstall ableton, sound drivers...or format C:

good luck

thats the thing...I *didn't* make any changes, yesterday midday I was working on ableton just fine, then a couple of hours later....shit-fest.

didnt update anything, didnt swap USB cables even. I tried repairing ableton's library which took like....5 hours?!?! and still the same thing. frustrating.

the startup ableton screen doesn't say its scanning anything crazy, it just sticks at 'loading new live set' for a long-ass time before finally opening up            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

Sigh, *finally* figured out what was going on. Apparently, for some stupid reason my ASIO drivers which were working fine for months completely stopped working and caused all of these issues.

If I simply switch it to Direct/MME mode, all of those issues vanish. wtf.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

what drivers were you using for ASIO? Sounds like you need to renistall those drivers again. I've not had good results working Ableton with just MME drivers.           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

Mubali,
I just started learning Ableton. I have a regular “home PC” from Dell, so no fancy soundcard. Not even sure what ASIO is. So far, the only things I’ve done were following Tom Cosm’s tutorials and creating a couple of kicks in Operator.

Is it that I didn’t hear some problems or do they kick in only when you do serious multi-layered work?

I was using ASIO4ALL 2.10 beta with my PreSonus Audiobox 2x2 USB interface...Going to try the 2.9 drivers now.

as for the difference between ASIO and MME if I'm not mistaken ASIO has lower latency?

edit: just installed 2.9 and restarted...I think this fixed my problems!!!! I feel kinda dumb, I was under the impression that I was using a stable release but instead I had a beta installed :\

those are my system ableton and asio settings, my latency is much lower than before, the only option im not positive about is the 'always resample 44 <-> 48' within the ASIO hardware options...

settings look good? Thanks for the input btw            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

btw, maine coon definitely check out the Covert Operators and Nick's Ableton Tutorials, you can find the links on the bottom right hand side of Cosm's site, great stuff there. I've also started a thread here on Isra dedicated to using Ableton specifically for Psy you might want to check out:

by the way will.... your audio interface has their own ASIO driver. Use that.           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

Well, there are good things and bad things about using the device-specific ASIO driver.

Good thing:

latency drops from ~36ms to 0. Cool!

Bad thing:

unable to produce sound - any!
ableton takes 3x longer to perform any action - bad!

:\

BTW, is it worth it to use Driver Error Compensation to put my overall latency at 0 MS?           If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

0ms latency?

man set your latency to something more real like.. 5ms or even 10ms if you want your computer to function properly.

as lower you set your buffer the more cpu cycles you need for it, at 0ms you have a pc with 0ms latency but not much power for making music.

and stop using the asio4all driver with the presonus it has its own asio driver, asio4all is for the ones that have an onboard or a soundcard that doesnt have native asio.. its a workaround not the way to go!          http://www.landmark-recordings.com/

uhhhhhhhhhhhh, mayhaps my previous post wasn't clear as to the result of using the presonus asio drivers?

As my previous post states. If i use the ASIO driver that has the presonus name next to it - I cannot produce any audio with ableton. at all. nothing.

In addition to that, every task takes extra long because something is wrong, because presonus' drivers are shit, and their support for their products are total shit as well.

In terms of drivers, I have three choices:

MME/Directx - ~60+ latency, tons of audio artifacts

ASIO4ALL - ~36 latency, very few audio artifacts if any

Presonus ASIO - 0 latency, unable to produce any audio, everything takes 3x as long, and if I adjust any settings, ableton just crashes.

The choice is very simple for me to make currently. I didn't know that 0 latency was bad. I suppose that's coming from a gamer background, because I associate latency with lag, and to me lag is always bad - I am completely open to being wrong about that however, but currently the only driver that makes any sense to use is ASIO4all.

I would GLADLY use drivers made specifically for my device, but I prize the ability to produce audio more than the satisfaction of using presonus' drivers.           If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe
