Hi,
First of all, I dont DJ. I produce, but only as a hobby.
I've taken steps toward learning to do LIVE sets. I'm practically opening Alberton live brand new out of the box as we speak.
I'm familiar with many DAWs; Calkwalk, Reason, Cubase, but specialize in FL studio so i don't think there will be a big learning curve..
What do you people consider to be the most important hardware to start with doing live sets?
-nothing 2 expensive(poor boy) for beginners.
thanks in advance. i always find valuable info in these forums.

That controller looks the part.
I do not know the first thing about live sets.
I've been to psytrance parties where the Dj have plenty hardware combined with his laptop(ableton live) setup..
My friend who Dj said i could prob link/map controls with a DMX. |

The best tutorials I've found on doing decent live sets are by Tom Cosm (you can find links to his tutorials all over these forums).
Whatever you do, please please please don't do like so many "live acts" do and just put your tracks in huge blocks in Arrangement View with one starting on the end beat of the previous. Of course you have to start somewhere but when you're at this stage then do this at home, and when you get comfortable doing something more interactive, then play out live. Ableton is capable of so much more than the way too many "live acts" make of it.

I understand.
Ultimately i would like to import some 'loops & tracks' from my FL studio project into Ableton. I'm new to ableton(3rd day) and I'm very very impressed. I CAN SEE IT IS CAPABLE OF MUCH MORE..
WOW, I may leave fruity,,, this DAW can do it all + live sessions <-cool
I WANT TO KNOW WHAT HARDWARE THE DJ/ARTIST USES WHEN DOING LIVE PSYTRANCE SETS??
-to tweak
They do not sit behind a laptop and use the mouse. no, they dance and tweak knobs on some kind of midi controller or whatever, i dont know. I have no experience with hardware. I have seen amazing preformances @ psytrance parties with DJs/artists behind a laptop + hardware/other_gear linked to albeton.
Only logic, i think, is that they map controls on the ?equipment? to controls on the DAW. |

What I do in Cubase (and you can do something similar in Ableton) is:
1.) I render my full track to wav until I have my master level set to peak at -3 db
2.) Once this is done, I solo different groups of sounds (kick, bass, drums, synth, etc.) and render all those into wavs of equal length. You can make as many or as few as you want but I make 7 channels personally.
3.) I make 7 audio channels in Ableton and rename them all according to the types of wavs I just rendered in Cubase. Then I put the wavs into their appropriate channels in Arrangement View and set the markers to the very beginning and the bpms according to the bpm of my track in the clip view at the bottom.
4.) I cut up all the wavs according to even bar lengths. Drums, Kicks, Bass etc. usually gets cut up into bigger pieces as these tend not to change as often as the synth wavs. Synth wavs etc. get cut up into smaller pieces but the key is that cuts are all even with each other or not cut at all.
5.) I delete all sections that contain no audio. I usually have more empty spaces in the synth/extra sounds channels than channels like kick and bass.
6.) I highlight the entire track in all channels, copy, go to Session View, select the first block in the first channel, and paste. This pastes all sections of the track into Session View. I label each and every Session clip with the number of bar lengths that clip is for later reference. I do this with all of my tracks. There will be empty session clips corresponding to the empty spaces made when I deleted the empty sections in Arrangement View. This is intended.
7.) I select ALL Session View Clips, right click, and remove the stop buttons.
8.) I select ALL clips, and in the Track Follow section in Clip View (click the "L" I think) and choose the option to Play Next and set the bar length to the bar length of each individual clip.
9.) I experiment and mess around with the above settings to my liking.
This allows you to click on different scenes to trigger different sounds. In columns with empty spaces, since I removed the Stop Buttons, clips in scenes I have not currently selected to play will continue playing where columns with clips in the scenes I selected to play will play the new clip.
I need to go to work now so I'll talk about hardware later.

^That is how i figured it should be done.. with a few exceptions. like, i compose a single instrument on a single loop(4,8 or 16 bar, or whatever) and arrange my music like this in FL. so, I can export a singel loop to wav and use as "clip" in Ableton. 0h and adjust the tempo the same.
btw, I love how ableton handles tempo changes to waves.
I seen the way Cosm go about it with the demo pack i downloaded. awesome stuff. He links a lot of effects\controlls to the keyboard.
So, i guess when i see the djs tweaking knobs it probably other Hardsynths,,
this apc40 looks interresting. I'm going test my friends DMX (which he uses for lighting effects) 2 control albeton.
I appreciate your input. Thanks a million

No worries. The good thing about the way I described is that it's easy to rearrange your clips how you want as well as gives you lots of empty spaces to add your own in like what you're talking about.
I bring my Virus TI Snow with my liveact and I do roughly the same thing with the MIDI channels for it. I put my audio synth channels on the crossfader and I make MIDI loops while the audio is running, and when all the audio synth clips in a group play themselves out, I crossfade over to the midi loops and play and tweak those until I feel like playing more audio again.
