Some very nice improvements in this version, I personally like find the multi-parameter manipulation, track grouping and GUI scaling very useful.
They messed up the UI for warping quite a bit, which is a real pain especially since I use it for DJ'ing as well and warp a lot of tracks.
But the engine has improved and the new "complex pro" mode is certainly an improvement.
The features that I find really interesting is share and Max4Live, but they are not ready yet and will be separate with prices to be announced.

hmmm, I'm about to upgrade, but am curious about this warping mess-up....how is it different? I read that the audio can be stretched (not to be confused with the timeline)/shrunken for better fine tuning...what else has changed? Max4Live is really the selling point for me, too.

It's a bit hard to describe, it's just very different.
You now have transient detection, which seems like a good idea, and you should be able to double-click to make a warp marker from a transient marker, which would be convenient if the transient markers ended up in the right place, but they often are early by a varying amount. It looks like they snap to a zero crossing, and I can't understand why that would be a desired behaviour when it's used for aligning beats.
Before I usually found the first kick, put a marker there and scroll to the end of the track and adjust the position so it's exactly on the beat there as well, and that will make more than 90% of psy tracks synced perfectly.Using the same approach with the new system just makes a total mess, but I'm slowly getting a hang of it:
First delete any extra markers if Live creates them (click on a marker, ctrl+a and delete)
Then create a marker at the first kick.
Delete the marker at the start of the track .
Drag the marker at the first kick so it snaps to a beat, then right-click and select "warp from here".
Now go to the end of the track, and if it's a track it picked up the BMP ok you create a new marker at a kick and move it so it snaps to a beat.
But quite often that doesn't work out at all, and one have to go trough the track and add many markers in tracks that have a consistent tempo and took seconds to warp before.
I guess I might find faster ways of warping eventually, but with earlier versions it was quite obvious how to warp and the new method is certainly a lot less intuitive.

Thanks, that's a good description of the problem! yes, that's how I warp my tracks as well...eergh, not sure I want to spend that much time applying a marker to each hit, which is how i'm perceiving the fix. I've noticed sync 'drift' before, and it would seem as though transient detection would 'fix' this, however, I feel it would be wise to allow users to disable this feature....but it's prob. embedded deep within the total warp function.

It's not that bad, and if the track tempo is constant you should still not need more than 4-5 markers.
You now how you before could drag a warp point without actually creating a marker?
From what I can figure that is not possible any more, so instead you have to either create a warp marker or use a transient marker.
Creating a warp marker means that you adjust tempo from the previous marker to the marker you created, while the tempo stays the same after the marker, hence you have to keep creating markers throughout the track to stay in sync.
And dragging a transient marker to snap would work really well if just the marker ended up in the right places.
Overall, after some practice I would say that warping takes on average about double the time I needed with Live 7.

Alright, cool. Thanks much! I'll keep this tutorial for when I do upgrade Might dust off my cdjs as well, lol!
That said, I think the advent of max4live will prove to be the most plentiful feature of the upgrade, with a user library that will become vast, for sure (just look at Reaktor!). Also the collaboration page that Ableton will host on their website, which allows for international music collaboration...with ease!
True innovation!

Well, as a Reaktor head don't get too excited until the Max/MSP heads start selling stuff...They are such a bunch of nerds that they could have been selling/giving away pluggos for years now...
I kind of expect the Cycling community to become more guarded because of this..not more open.. |

I guess my hope (expectation?) is that as more ableton users start to create plug-ins using max4live, THEY will be the ones contributing to a user library...I know i've really wanted to start using max/msp, and this will be the opportunity, all the while working within the environment i'm most familar.
BTW--give 'generative music software' a search in google....alot of people have made some very interesting plugs/insruments in max/msp and ARE giving them away for free. I'm sure there are countless examples out there in cyber space....
