I use a 512 buffer so nothing drastically low. It´s not the buffer at play here but a bottleneck in your hardware system i suspect. Could be either a poorly designed firewire chip, the hard drive or too little memory.
Running a modern system sometimes takes up as much 2 gigs no problem so squeezing as much memory in your laptop as you can should be a concern too.
If it is the hard drive i would advice to go SSD (really the difference is phenomenal!!!) pricey yes, but no more mechanical lock up´s because of bass vibrations and a computer where all the components speed are more closely matched.
Try to elmininate as many possibilities of error as possible.....play only your set via the built in soundcard to check if it´s related to the fireface if it´s not then check your memory and see if you have enough. Finally it could be the drive, but you have to approach this methodically otherwise you will not find the culprit It´s hard to tell you exactly what is wrong without you doing further investigation into this

I don't know if your problem is related to this, but there is some serious problems with Live8 if/when Live process takes about 1000-1400MB of memory, at least if the memory consuption is caused by VST plugins. When it takes about 1300MB of RAM it would load certain plugins anymore and will crash to serious program error.
You can try this by doing an arbitrary Live project, just add so many plugins and channels until Live.exe takes about 1400MB of memory and you will certainly run into problems (or please tell me if you don't).
I am considering platform change because I cannot finish my tunes.
