Abakus – Indu 12" (Dragonfly)

A: Abakus - Indu
B: Abakus - Indu (Shiloh Remix)

Abakus is London-based Russell Davies, a relatively new artist on the Dragonfly roster. As an intended album teaser, one of the more upbeat album tracks, “Indu” gets the remix treatment from Canadian progressive breakbeat wizards Shiloh for a 12" release. The remix has been getting support from top progressive DJs worldwide such as Steve Gerrard, Nick Warren, and John Digweed.

A: Indu – Original Mix
The original mix opens with a laidback breakbeat groove that slowly evolves with a catchy emotional melodic hook, and a tasteful gated vocal sample. Simple stringy melodies and atmospheres give this track a serious and melancholic feel in its progression. At 4 minutes a redeeming melody gently emerges and massages the listener to a blissful ending. Clocking in at barely over 5 minutes, it’s rather short, but still gets the job done.

B: Indu – Shiloh Remix
Newcomers Shiloh have made a huge name for themselves over the last year with a string of fantastic releases on Electrofly and Method, as well as numerous remixes. This remix shows them at their very best. Somewhere between breakbeat and progressive trance, the track starts simply with a kick and light atmospheric chorus. Around 1 minute, an absolutely huge and infectious overdriven bassline comes storming in and drives the track until the end. Melodies, hooks and rhythms skillfully sneak their way in and out of the soundscape, keeping the listener never knowing what will come next. Midway through, the vocal sample from the original appears, yet this time it is treated with a dissonantly haunting Posford-esque quality.

This remix is dark, tricky, playful, emotional, and breathtakingly psychedelic all rolled up in one package. Shiloh has always been at the top of their game with the progressive sound – with this remix they have proven they have the goods to deliver fantastic psychedelic music as well.

Overall, this is a wonderful plate of vinyl from Dragonfly. The original mix is a great track for chill rooms, and would also serve well as a warm-up or cool down track on the main floor. The Shiloh remix is wonderfully constructed and will rocket any progressive dancefloor directly into space. Huge, huge tune. This is a necessity for any progressive DJ who wants a little more funk and psychedelia in their record bag.

9/10
