a short test:)

i've loaded a sample of my track in AAMS and mastered it using the preset "House Trance RMS"

here are some samples:

- unmastered - http://leogrif.ru/medea_unmastered.mp3
- mastered with AAMS - http://leogrif.ru/medea_mastered_with_aams.mp3
- mastered "with hands" by me - http://leogrif.ru/medea_mastered_by_me.mp3 [i'm not mastering ninja for sure, however:-)]

conclusion: seems that i've won the loudness war )))
seriously, don't know, nothing awful...

I've tested it extensively and done all kinds of comparisons and inspection with spectral analysis, A/B with my own mastering, Ozone etc..

It's not a bad program, and if you read the manual it does state clearly that it is NOT a replacement to a trained professional mastering engineer - merely it is a shortcut to getting a good mix polished enough to send out to a record company. (Where, if you're lucky they'll send it to a professional)

I've found the best way to use it is use the Auto Master button, it will scan the wav and create it's own preset, takes bloody ages, but seems to be the best method.. unless you want to learn how to use all the multitude of various functions - in which case you might as well send it to a real engineer. The whole point of it is a one-button solution.

I used to use it on mixes so I could get a rought idea of how good I could expect the mastering to come out and then I could go back and make changes in the mix. Bit tedious, but it trained my ears to spot things I might not have picked up on when mixing.

These days, I don't use it at all. Since treating my room, upgrading my monitors, getting a DAC and generally knowing what I'm doing a bit better - my mixes are only really needing a bit of gentle compression and limiting to finish them off. AAMS doesn't compare too much to what I can do myself, so I'd rather get it done professionally and just 'master' with my simple method.

The only thing I still don't know how to achieve that AAMS can do is get a perfect flat top in Cool Edits spectral view. Though quite honestly, I can't hear much difference when the top is 'lumpy'.

Tomos, what RMS do you usually have in the most loud parts of your track before mastering?           http://soundcloud.com/aedem

I don't have a very precise or scientific way of mixing. I do it all by ear. First I find what I think will be the loudest element of the track depending on style (kick for most dance music, snare for breaks) drop it to -10db and mix everything else around it. This averages out to about 6db of headroom and a few wild peaks can be tamed with a compressor.

At some point I'd like to set up the K system, but I need to get round to it.
