What kind of equipment can you use to loop all that stuff like the guy did in the first video? that's a VERY cool idea. And I think I could do it.

you have to have lots of knowledge about notes, chords scales-moods- solos combinations and all that jazz and than a longer expirience should be good for feeling I guess.
all u need apart from this are instruments ,passion and a sequencer.

On the technology side, what kind of sequencer would give you the looping ability like that to play live and make it seamless?
basically,
how does he make stuff loop without having to set up his sequencer stuff etc. He just plays something, then it loops, then he plays the next thing, and it loops. I don't understand how he's doing it.
What is that footpedal he's using?

cubase or any sequence:
make an eight bar loop, active global record button and start to loop the track, create separate track for each instrument/mic and automate your midi controller so you can select which track will be active/recorded. everything can be automated in cubase. add inserts for premix. nice features

Ableton 8 will definitely have killer live looping possibilities, as well as the ability to make me splooge.
But, since that's not out he's probably using this technique in Ableton 7:

You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me?

yeah, he's probably using a hardware looper in the first video.
ableton live is really great for this and much more useful than any other sequencer. if you do it with cubase, like naga said, you are pretty much stuck with the loop length of your choice (8 bars in his example). however, in ableton, all the loops that you create can be of different length and they will still sync up (well, they have to be divisible by 2). so i can record 2 bars of drums. my bass line/chord progression can take 4 bars. and then the melodic lines can take 8 bars. so what that means is for the 1 complete loop of the melodic line, the bass line will loop twice and the drums will loop 4 times.
i use fcb1010 foot controller to control various things in live. in live 7 there's no native way to do this, so you need to use something like Bome's Midi translator. it intercepts all incoming midi messages and translates them into key strokes (as well as mouse movements and other midi messages). so with the foot controller i can navigate the screen (up, down, left, right), record/delete/stop/play loops, and launch different scenes.
so it's a quick and very fun way of generating ideas. i have an akai mpk49, so i can quickly drum up some beat with its drum pads. then pick up my bass...then guitar... just keep improvising until something interesting emerges, instantly recording it, and continuing to improvise the next part. and all without stopping to play or touch the mouse. it's really great when you feel inspired and are totally in the "zone."
