A trick for getting music into your sequencer...

One problem I have with making music is that when I make a melody or some idea for a musical part in my head, I literally have to race in order to get it out into the sequencer, because I have a really poor memory and I'll forget it really fast.

Anyway, I saw this girl performing on stage a while ago, and all she had was a sampler, a jug, and a guitar. She went up on stage and started using them to create little loops that would all play together over top each other, and then finally she'd sing over it.

So I got the idea that I could just take a melody or whatever in my head, and basically use my mouth to sing/beatbox/tap it into a microphone and record it directly into a track in my project.

Then go in a new track, and basically use my audio recording as a guidline to set up the notes in the right scale in midi, it really helps to arrange the rhythm in particular.

I've only just started doing this today, but it's working pretty well. I'm probably not the first person to come up with this idea, but I thought I would share it.

There are also some Wav to Midi convertors, which basically do this for you.
I had some poor experience with one called Midifier. Trying to sing a trumpet line and then having a vst play it, and the results were... Not so accurate.           Dressed to kill you look so right... I am drunk with lust tonite.

Well maybe it was your voice that was not so accurate rather than Midifier

Even if you're not very good at singing (Personally, I'm a legend.. uhh.. not!) a pocket dictaphone, or little recording device could be handy for noting down ideas.

Even as just a rough reminder.

If you want something more extravagant than a pocket note-taker - I can recommend the MAudio 24/96 Microtrack stereo recorder. The sound quality is superb and I can put 'real world' sounds and potentially singing into my tracks (just not my own screeching warblings)
