i mix my track...well mix it as much as i can...while i create it....i think that is a good way of working....
often my final mix is rather more of a tweak here and there than a huge mixing session,...depends tho...
but yea i dont think mixing and creatin at the same time is a bad thing...but if you feel u need to change , go for it!

I like your approach TRapp
the best is that you use the kick and bass for reference in the begining and that you dont start to tweak them in the early stage of the track....
im going to try your method...
it really makes sense..
thanks for sharing your ideas....

im not into rules like this.
i think you should start with something that inspires you. Maybe its a type of bassline, maybe its a synth sound, maybe a melody or maybe even an FX sound.
Then you brain should tell you where to go next based on how you feel the music. I wouldnt peg myself into a methodology. Enjoy the journey imo. |

I would have credited everyone properly on the album sleeve but... well, you know, pressures of space and laziness meant that I could only namecheck myself and Andrew. I'm sure you understand. I just have one question after all this - can anyone tell me how to get my bassline sounding killar?

hehehehe...i'll send ya some basslines dude.
i like to write the tune from the beginning to the end...starting with the first sound in the tune and building everything else whent it has to come in the tune. i make a lot of rubbish too that doesnt work immediately but can be used later. first of all i gather some ideas tho, play around with devices and look for samples etc.

Dont listen to the loops to much when you have something nice done, i know lots of friends who hipnotize themselves with some nice going bits of music and dont go further in the arrangement after a while they get bored with the sounds ... when actually the sounds are good !!!
Go further develop the arrangement try to finish the track briefly

indeed !!!...this is happening to me all the time...Maybe because i always try to mix the track in the same time with the construction, and i listen the track elements to many times, untill i get bored of it. I never can't wait untill the track is finished and only than, to do the mix. I always wanna hear the track on maximum quallity...fuck !!! I am addicted to perfection !!! hehe
Need to change my style !!!

Actually, I dont think you should change your style!!..
"Mixing along the way" is VERY important while writing a track!!, I dont mean that you have to balance eveything out perfect for the final mix on the way, but you are already MIXING when you make/choose two sounds that has to work together in the same part of a track...wether it be Kick and bass, or your main lead-theme(s) and a supporting motif or samples...
If the sounds dont fit together, occupying the exact same frequency area fore example, then it is going to be hell to make them work together in the final mix...
So choosing sounds that fits in the mix and with eachother - will make you final mix much easier to make (and better sounding)..

Hehe, don't worry dude, it was just a joke, i am not changeing my style.I work like this because i alway do my masterings by my own, and this helps me a lot...But the problem is that this takes a lot of time. Sometimes i think that is easyer just to make my songs and give to somebody else to do the masterings, so i will have much more releases, just like most of the artist do.
I mean...what the fuck !!! afther 10 years of making psytrance i have only 1 album released, and the second one is ready now...Other artists, afther 2 years of making psytrance, they have 3-4 albums released..
So...thats why i said "I am fucking addicted to perfection, and i can't change myself!!" lol
BOM BOM !!

I personally find that I get more creative if I leave the kick and bass until I have some interesting leads and/or sounds.
Energy wise of course the bass and kick is the fundament in a track, but creativly I would say that it very rarely is.
If I make the basis of the track first without the kick and bass my leads, percussion etc will tend to have a more defined rythm as well as more creative sound, and then when you add the kick and bass it will kick nicely.
Also I find it rather limiting sometimes when I do make fairly melodic tunes to make my leads follow the melody of the bass.
Traditionally in songwriting you would very rarely start with the bass pattern. It's usually there to complement the rest of the track and not the other way around.
So for me it goes something like this most of the time:
1. Sound FX and intro sounds to build some kind of atmosphere.
2. Some kind of dominant synth. Can be melodic or not, it varies, but should have some rythm, sound or melody to it that grabs the attention.
3. Hats and percussion.
4. Another lead or sound.
5. Kick and bass.
6. More of whatever is missing. Leads, perc or sound FX.
7. When I have more than enough ideas ready I start with the arrangement. I like having as much as possible to play with ready to make the arrangement process as fast as possible.

i think this is a great approach and i'd imagine we'd be hearing a lot more original psy if at least half of the people who start with kick & bass tried to work this way. |
