I read somewhere that Royksopp like to write their tracks without a beat to start with.
Something i keep on meaning to try as i ALWAYS start with the kick and bass (yawn) |

most of my tracks come after 2/3 hours of pure garbadge, until i get some hooks that i think will make a track that people would like to hear
of course i always start with bass and kick and try to make variations as soon as possible as those seem to get harder when the track is more developed
every thing else is as said here before

agreed here... sometimes, not that often, jsut being playing with a synth just for the fun of it, tweaking knobs to get the patch of the day , that may be the sufficient to start on a new composition

so far all my tracks start this way, playing with a synth and getting something interesting out. i tried starting with kick and bass once but found out that it doesn't work for me (the result was crap), as i didn't have enough "information" so as to create the percussions and general groove (also the bass). these elements (percs/bassline/groove) are derived from the melody or main synth line, at least for me that is...
p.s. btw, very informative post Saimon! .

start off with writing 4 bars of
1) kick and bass
2) synths - main anf fxy
3) fx
4) percussion
5) pads , atmos
then write the track making all those small imp variations and modulation
then add swoops , revs , crashes , those reverses

well i seem to do it pretty differently...
I start with what I feel should be the beginning, and work my way to the end... changing and manipulating as I want.
I don't make loop blocks etc. from the beginning, just "go with the flow" so to speak... As long as you know how a scale works it's easy, and you can change the bassline to suit a melody that suddenly erupts in your head!

1: choose chord and harmonic progression
2: making basic pad + bass scetch
3: begin to build a track with percs
4: building the tracks sceleton of drums, bass, pads with building some melodies on the way
5: after track sceleton made begin to add sound fx and funky groves

Subtractive songwriting? Interesting idea, I'll try it...

no real order for me, whatever flows out goes down. lately ive been starting with a pad+bassline+kick, then some percs and other light things to get things moving.
i usually end up with a pile of layers that melt together nice, and design the track with those pieces
i hope that made some sense |

imho.. naturally first step
but scales seem not to be important for most trance artist
well i go like this:
1.choose scale or 2 that fit together
2.bassline
3.kick
4.percussions
now i have the loop its time to tweek and make some solo's

yo tzab u know im not like most artists
but u right novadays trance is 1 note bassline and thats why its so sux
chordss and harmonics important if u gona do different parts with different atmosfere and give feeling for different emotions so its too impotrant imho
