I have just realised a simple thing that seems to be one of very responsible for the "flow" feeling of music.
Make several loops (percussion, for example) of different amount of bars and play them together.
For example, one loop of 3 bars, 2-nd loop of 4 bars and 3-d loop of 5 bars.
So, it won't bring rhytmic chaos to the track, because the patterns are rather short and they are looped, but it's difficult for the listener to "catch" each loop separately, so it feels that the music flows
I did so before, but didn't realise how it works, now I think the flow is under control!
Works for me in ambient etc., but I thinnk this can be as well applied to dance styles.
Try!

Hi Medea,
Yes, most definitely, I have been using this technique for awhile with great results. the subtle changes and overlaps create enough variation for the exact effect you mentioned. great for bringing it up!

good tip.
yes, in fact the little changes make music more human and less metronomic. good for ambient.
sometimes the flow is related to a good sequence of expected things.. and sometimes is related to unexpected changes that still sound good.

you can do 3+5 or 4+4.. that's 8 bars
(3+4+5)+4=16bars
1st, 2nd, third loops, then 2nd loop again, for example..

does not compute. What is not understandable about running a 3 bar loop of percussion on top of a 5 bar synth loop on top of a 2 bar bass loop or something??
What does "it's not feet in 8 bars" mean??

agree with medea. i noticed this long ago i would make a 3 bar loop that was awesome and i'd be like damn only 3 bars but keep going anyways then you realize that that 3 bar loop infact is still in time and it will match your 4 bar loops at the end of every 12 bars. 3x4=12

hmmm ... i'm currently stucked with that stuff in my tracks. so this thread seems to be a solution BUT : i don't really understand what you are talking about
first of all i noticed that in lots of tutorial-videos people call 1 bar for a pattern like k-b-b-b - k-b-b-b - k-b-b-b - k-b-b-b.
so 1 bar means a 4 kicks pattern and is similar to 1 beat (so counting 1-2-3-4) ???
sometimes people describe 1 bar with 4x above pattern. that means 16 kicks!!!
so what is 1 bar for you/here???
and according to that can someone maybe give a describing screenshot for Medea's idea please ... maybe with a timeline e.g.?
that would be awesome cauz i'm really in a fight with flow im my tracks currently ... and i hope/guess that this could help out of that trap !!!
thx in advance mates!!!

In most dance electronic music:
1 bar = 4/4 = 4 beats =16 steps |

99% of the music is built on 8 bars sections. you can't divide 8 with 3. or 8 with 5. i can devide 8 bars to 4 or 2 bars loops.
at the picture Medea uploaded i see 8 bars loops if i understand what's going on there (i work with cubase).
