A strange experience

hi,
apologies if this is a bit long, but here goes...
in 2005 i was in europe for a gig, and i was looking for additional gigs when i was contacted by a guy called marko from slovenia to come peform there. i came there and the gig was good and the people nice and it seemed like i had made a friend for the future.
last week i flew to slovenia again. i wanted to visit slovenia and the people again and maybe see some friends who live in germany so i agreed to pay the plane ticket that cost me 300$. the agreement was that marko would pay me 200euro for sure, and we will share some profits from thier event as well. since everything in 2005 went fine i didnt see any problem and was sure this will all work out fine.
the event was to be held in a place called tovarna, wich is an abandoned bicycle factory that later turned into a weapons factory and as a test facility for nerve gas. marko and his crew have squatted there for the past year or so. they have no running water in most buldings/rooms of the factory, and only limited electricity provided by a generator.
as soon as i got there the problems started. i was picked up from the airport and brought to tovarna where a sort of rock/folk band was playing a sorta free jam, with some youths hanging out there. it was pretty cool until the girl playing cello collapsed and fainted. the other memebers of the band didnt even flinch, and kept right on playing with power and emotion as she was laying there on the small stage.
i was very tired from the day and the flight and seeing this made me feel wierd, also i had all my gear and bags there so i asked marko if we could go drop my things in his house and i could sleep. he told me i could go to one of his friend's places, so i went with his pal. we went really near there to another building of the factory where i realized he lives in. although it was near, i didn't pay attention to the way and after getting there i didn't know where i am in relation to where everyone else is. the guy put me in a room with no water, and some limited electricty. i was given a VERY dirty mattress that had brown stains on it that smelled like poo, a blanket the guy said was "kinda clean" and was left there alone in this very dirty room that included everything squat places include - broken windows, very dirty floors, old pipes and equipment. i must addmit i was scared and confused. the place was very wierd with graffitied walls and scary noizes outside the room all night. i felt like in some second-rate horror movie and was getting very paranoid. the worst thing i was alone and couldn't ease my paranoia with a friend or partner.
marko never came to pick me up from there and just went home, and his pal got in at some point and went to sleep. i didnt really know what part of ljubljana i am in and was scared to leave at night with all my things, but as soon as morning came i took everything and left. i got to a main street and took a taxi to the train station where i got a train to munich where my sister lives god bless her...
after getting to munich (7 hour train from slovenia + travel in the city to my sister's house) suddenly marko calls me (after almost a day since i last saw him). i guess he slept off his drunk/stoned state and remembered me. he started telling me its a misunderstanding and i shouldn't have left and i was among friends and things of this sort. i started to feel like maybe i was wrong for leaving and considered coming back, but i was also considering just cutting my loses and getting a plane ticket home from munich.
then the next day i went out to chill in munich to try to shake the bad feeling away and maybe buy a ticket home (lucky to have my sister there to lend me extra money). marko called and said he wanted me to come back but thier generator broke so there might not even be a party and he will tell me soon. at this point i no longer trusted
anything he said but i still was hoping to get some money back at least, so i told him i would come back if he agrees to give me 300euro instead of 200, because i have already lost more money on the trains (70e from ljubljana to munich). he said fine and that he will call me in a few to tell me the generator situation. after some hours of me calling him every hour or two to understand what is going on he says that generator cant be fixed and everything is canceled.
so as it turns out, even if i wouldn't have left the party would not happen and i would not get any money or satisfaction from this trip...
i bought my ticket home and went home the next day feeling like crap and owing a lot of money to my sis, my folks and friends. all in all this little "adventure" cost me over 600e. i don't hold a day job and spend all my time on music so while this may not sound like much money to me it is a problem at the moment. this is money that i was supposed to be spending on manufacturing my album, and now that will have to be posponded as well.
i knoww already the lessons from this... not to trust on faith and ask all the money and flights beforehand, and make sure what the accomodations are as well. i am posting this so everyone can know the way this slovenia crew choses to treat artists/visitors from another country. seems drinking/drugs are more important to them then bieng honest and true people, and all this hippie/squat/peaceandlove mentality isn't worth anything if its all fake.
in short, this is my warning to not work with these people, and be especially carefull when dealing with organizers abroad.
i hope i can shake this bad feeling soon and get back to believing and loving my own music and the psytrance scene, but right now this seems like a hard task ahead.
if possible, please keep the cynical comments to a minimum.

ooh sounds rough we all have bad bookings but some times its so bad you feel you must screen your offers. Im sorry to hear that its a shame the good people get fockd sometimes but the world is rough and thats the price we pay for being true. but dont worry we all know your dedication yaron, and just know that itll work itself out.

As a Slovenian I'm very sorry to read all this. As we talked on msn, i recognised this Marko and i must say he's not even relevant psy scene organiser. So it's him to blame not slovenia, really.

Well buddy after i read all of it.... i can first say im sorry you got this bad experience.
heres some tips for next times buddy:
work with booking contract (although i think contracts aint worth much in it but put this sentence say money flights and accomandation ... will make the organizer understand that he will get screwed if he will break it.
as chuck said its a rough world... so be rough as well.... ask for the money you tihnk you worth.... and as well for the terms....
and my last advice is..... buddy.... find a job do something to make money..... making money from music right on the start is hard ...... dont count on 300 E from1 gig to help with your album....... |

Wow, thats hardcore, nerve gas factory you say???? And they lived in it?? I say be happy u got out in one piece and you still have your equipment, put this one off to experience... Always get paid upfront, at least travelling fee and half your DJ fee, if they cant float the cash it means they cant pay you if the party doesnt do well so best forget about it. Its a freaky scene we move in...

i must emphasis that i have no bad vibes with slovenia or the slov scene, just with these specific organizers.... anyways shame i wasn't thinking right and didn't contact you and meet you for some beers at least.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience Faxi, dont let it rob you of your artistic spirit and keep up the good work - Thats the most important thing.
I think you were right in your actions, they are all very well justified. Creepy place you arrived at there, and at the very least the person you were in touch with should have prepared you better as well as looked after you personally.
Its obvious that you already drew your conclusions out of this mess, and really, it goes deeper than that.
Its a problem that organizers do not pay artists up front if need be, and if artists demand it they might not get booked.
That is really the core of the matter, so you have to choose to trust people, and even people you have worked with before might fuck you over in one way or the other....
Its not always because its bad people either, people change according with the circumstances in their lives, sometimes they should just give the party organizing a rest untill they are up for it again.
I hope it all works out in the end, but like I said, mostly importantly, dont let it hold you back in regards to creating new music.
