From what I understand, a DSP card (like UAD),only saves CPU power when only using the plugins that come with the card.Eg, if I install such a card, but not use its plugins, I will not notice any difference in performance!Am I right? (Please don't yell at me!) |

a dsp card does not save cpu power, in case of old uad-cards it consumes (a very tiny bit) of cpu power.
if you use a plug of a dsp card f.e. reverb then the power needed to run the reverb is not consumed from your cpu but from the dsp card. thats why they say dsp cards save cpu power.

Another silly question related to UAD.
As far as I understand, this cards are only DSP + plugins, no AD\DA and I\O ?
In other words, can they be used without another regular soundcard or no?
PS
btw, if you google for UAD, you will see that UAD is also Utah Association for the Deaf. Strange coincidence...

no, UAD,Powercore ,Duende etc. cannot be used without audio interface
Sonic Scope on the other hand
is a DSP card with lots of plugins, of which some are awesome, and is an Audio Interface
and mixer too, where you can mix your tracks inside it and not in your sequencer
though it is a little difficult to set it up , i ve read very good comments about its quality

The most obvious advantage is that it acts just as a 0-latency hardware mixer...but that is only interesting if you do live recording I guess.
Also I do also notice a difference in sound when mixing on it compared to doing the whole mix in the sequencer.
And it's nice to be able to easily set up stuff like for example filters controlled by envelope followers since you got limitless routing capabilities and can patch audio trough the modular synth with more than 300 different modules to choose from.
There is also some great compression, EQ and reverb available.
