I finally got into my sampler (Halion) and started mucking around with it. Up until this point I haven't really explored samplers and am finding that it requires a different way of thinking than synthesis.
In this particular instance I was using audio samples as the source and having fun setting loop points within the sample so that if I held a key down it would play the looped portion until I released the key at which point the rest of the audio played. I then set up my modwheel to twiddle the filter and an expression pedal to control the release time...
But then I quickly started to get frustrated by what I perceived to be the limitations of Halion. I wanted an LFO to control the loop point, so that the looped portion would vary as per the LFO. Halion couldn't do this. I tried Battery 2, but while it is similar in sampling capabilities it also does not let me get creative with the loop points. What's worse, it doesn't even let me automate those loop points (Halion might, I forgot to try it).
All in all I felt Halion was nicely built, but lacking on features. I may be spoiled from the likes of Albino2 (mmm modulation, mmm built-in effects) but I suspect that there's a better sampler out there.
Does anyone know if Kontakt offers more flexibility as far as modulation goes? I really like the sound of a loop section that varies, I just wish I could automate it or use a mod wheel to control it.
And of course, any other tips on creative sampling are more than welcome. Maybe Halion is more than I need and I simply don't know how to use it?
How are other folks using samplers? Aside from percussion, it's pretty new to me.
peace,

from what i understand Kontakt 2 is superior as for modulation.. i very rarely use Kontakt but i'm sure if you check the NI site there should be a demo for Kontakt 2 and a list of new features compared to version 1. Good luck. |

Heya Gadi! Er... I think I'm using version 2.
I have a vague notion of the power of using a sampler, especially as a secondary processing to a synth line (crazy pitch bend effects and whatnot), but it's just a new way of thinking that I'm trying to patiently learn.
I'll check on the version of Halion and also into Kontakt 2.
Thanks for the replies!

try halion 3 its superior to 2 in many ways. i use halion for my kik, i find it easier to draw the notes in a "game" of kiks then with the audio, also i can repeat patterns in various intruments by just copying the midi notes and loading whatever into the sampler.

Alex, I cannot say much about the sampler's modulation, because I only use the EXS24 sampler (from old Emagic) and the Roland S760 hardware sampler, and they are far away from the Kontakt. If you only wish a gorgeous filter, go to the EXS24. I love it!
