A psilocybin research funded by the federal gov ? Far out...
Row row row your boats gently down the stream; merrily merrily merrily merrily life is but a dream. |

Two months later, 24 of the participants filled out a questionnaire. Two-thirds called their reaction to psilocybin one of the five top most meaningful experiences of their lives. On another measure, one-third called it the most spiritually significant experience of their lives, with another 40 percent ranking it in the top five.
About 80 percent said that because of the psilocybin experience, they still had a sense of well-being or life satisfaction that was raised either "moderately" or "very much."

A friend of me who disagrees with a lot of Hicks told me this:
""The idea that the creative endeavor and mind-altering substances are entwined is one of the great pop-intellectual myths of our time ...
Substance abusing writers are just substance abusers -- common garden variety drunks and druggies, in other words. Any claims that the drugs and alcohol are necessary to dull a finer sensibility are just the usual self-serving bullshit. I've heard alcoholic snowplow drivers make the same claim, that they drink to still the demons." --Stephen King" |

Bill Hicks was not advocating drug abuse, he advocated freedom of the individual being to do anything what he wants with his own body. He was against government's manipulation of our minds and bodies. I think that was his main agenda.

Hicks was just saying that he had a very good time doing 'em and as pavel said he was trying to remind everyone of their right to be free to make what they want out of their lifes and that noone should have the authority to steal that right from you..
As for the article I believe its very encouraging as long as it does not stop there ..

A drunk mans words are a sober mans thoughts.

Unfortunately, Stephan King's thoughts probably need a rougher editor than Hemmingway who more than entertained his absinthe habit "for creativity"

OT: How much Stephen King have you read? I think he is a rather good writer, his plotlines are ingenious and fairly diverse, his writing is solid, the dialoge is mostly good to very good, and the charactar development is very strong in his better works (althoug not all of them I admit). His best IMO are the first three or four books of "The Dark Tower" series. And BTW I believe he did credit mescaline with giving him the idea for that...
Its easy to call someone a hack if they are famous, prolific, and not dead, espepecially if their genre is 'horror'. Sorry I couldn't sit by and let you call the man a "hack".
About the study: This is great news! Hopefully it will open the door to more research into the neurochemical underpinnings of religious experience, and the healing potential of psychedelics. |
