This is used to "center" the low frequencies. When you set up a surround sound system, your sub should be as close to the center as possible. This is because lower frequencies are more "felt" than "heard". Not centering them will result in low frequency cancellation, as the sound waves subtract each other out and making the bass sound flat.
Can be a cool effect during a breakdown or at the end of a measure, but in general, keep those low frequencies centered and in mono.
To achieve this (in Ableton), I set up a return track with mostly the kick and bassline going to it, and use Ableton plug-in, in the utilities simply called "mono".

Got it-big thanks for the info. Quick follow-up question though-what would be an example of a sound that includes the frequencies you'd want in mono, but also has higher frequencies you'd want in stereo? For example, is this sort of plugin used so you can have stereo in the higher frequencies of a bass part?
Thanks,
Pete

I do this all the time, although I'm conservative with the stereo effect use. Protoculture wrote an article on how he does this to make bass sound larger, but I don't remember if it was a plugin like this or just layering of different basses. You can check it out over at

I use Brainworx Control, really simple and nice plugin. |
