Hi,
I'm considering buying a new computer to play around with music production a little bit.
I currently have a small laptop which is obviously not up for the task.
So I think I need:
1. A computer
2. A Soundcard
3. A small midi keyboard
And I will go on from there. Is there anything I should take notice of? latency issues? anything?
Regards,
Timmy |

A big screen or two screens, efficient CPU, good cooler, at least 4 gb of RAM (8 GB preferably) passive video card (or even on board), USB and FireWire ports, maybe hackintosh-compatible too. That's if you go with PC. If Mac it is easier - you just buy current iMac and that's it.
Monitors and stands. Acoustic room treatment. Soundcard with several ins and outs. Midi keyboard, better if there are knobs and faders too. If you are not pro piano player, you won't need too posh keyboard, anything like Edirol will be fine.
Some inspiring VST, favourite sequencer and gogogo!

Well the Focusrite Saffire 6 usb is a good soundcard and like said above, monitors are also important. More important than a keyboard if you ask me. I just got the Nanokey 2 for under 50 euros and it's really fun to play with. Makus is pretty much right with the PC. |

Fast enough processor, fast rpm hard drive(makes bounce faster), 4G ram card min(the faster the better), silent fans and good power supply,12"! good quality monitors(better to get 12" behringers then 6" dynaudio.) and fitting amp for them(they have to be super fit together or it is better to get amped ones), external sound card , midi controller and extra screens is always good, some room treatment(usualy i see only improvised something in most studios, your room should be dry and have no bass traps near you specialy loose window reverb infront of you and behind you lol) , monitor headphones, firewire ports is a must for usb connections for soundcard or midi. Anything else?

+ 1 on the dual screens and i suggest to go for a larger masterkeyboard, becauese they are not much more expensive and you can be more creative.

If you decide to spend some more on a Mac, you'll save up with Logic being dirt cheap.
My missus bought me a brand spanking new MacBook i7 off ebay, for 1345euros!
Peace out.

Wow, thanks for the responces.
Unfortunately I live in London. I moved here from Israel about a year ago.
The thing is, I work full time and go to unviersity as well, so I'm not sure I'll have time for music. I think the best solution for me would be to buy a good computer with a midi keyboard now and then wait for the summer when I have a 4 month break to possibly get the other stuff.
I need a computer anyway, a midi keyboard should not be too expensive, especially second hand. |

For that amount, you could have bought a plane ticket to the USA and bought one from the store for $1345.
