What is quality as defined in music?
Quality -- you know what it is, yet you don't know what it is. But that's self-contradictory. But some things are better than others, that is, they have more quality. But when you try to say what the quality is, apart from the things that have it, it all goes poof! There's nothing to talk about. But if you can't say what Quality is, how do you know what it is, or how do you know that it even exists? If no one knows what it is, then for all practical purposes it doesn't exist at all. But for all practical purposes it really does exist. What else are the grades based on? Why else would people pay fortunes for some things and throw others in the trash pile? Obviously some things are better than others -- but what's the "betterness"? -- So round and round you go, spinning mental wheels and nowhere finding anyplace to get traction. What the hell is Quality? What is it? -R.M Pirsig.

This is subjective .......
There can't be quality in art but nowadays ppl do art for money so there is a quality factor as well ....
as i define quality as newbie artist
Quality of Music .............
Creative rythms , Creative FX , Creative Melodies , Creative filter play .............
Quality of like ...............
if i like the fucking music
Quality of Sound
i don't think i need to write all shit i think sound should be coz it's subjective and most of Psy artists not follow it coz lack of "something".........ah knowledge forgot
Quality of Construction
this one can be done only by Djs and Artists "the ones who know how things should sound" (or maybe not)..............
if this beat match the rythm ,,,, if melody enters well aka new remix , the "better one" (who knows?) inside our brain ......
Quality in main it is very complex chain of actions ..... which i don't think can be defined in one word .......... |

well, i guess i could google it if i really cared...
imho:
quality is binary, you have it or you don't. there can't be high or low or variations.
like sektor666 says, a lot goes into deciding if music has quality or not, but in the end it does or doesnt.
for psy, good production values are the most important requirement for quality. if it dont have that, it cant be quality,
after that it's all taste, tho creativity can be of quality or not too...

just continue to trip about subject
most important thing that i did not mentioned is start point .....
for example Sektor666 , Surrender and Simon Posford decide to make music and each one create track ,,,,, from some reason i think that Simon Psford will produce much better product that me and you because he has more expirience and talent (maybe?) .... so from that Simon Posford have more qualited product that we will have so we create a start point in quality ,,,, then we listen to more and more music and decide the avarage what music should be.....................
better than define quality go and define what quality definitions in music ....................

+Dance abillity / Chill Abillity
Sound Design
+Mix
++Clips
++Unwanted Distortion
+Levels
++Volume
++Balance
++Frequency Balance
+Mastering Level
+Compression
+Sample nature
++Naturality
i think these are the most objective quality factors
you can take my list copy to your post and add things there coz i sure forgot many of these factors ..............
i think it would be intresting and teaching research |

hey ps. yes it is... i gave credit to Pirsig at the end of my post. he raises an interesting issue.
now to continue:

There's an entire branch of philosophy concerned with the definition of Quality, known as esthetics. Its question, What is meant by beautiful?, goes back to antiquity... the idea that Quality should be subordinated to any point of view is cheap. The intellectual process was/is forcing quality into its servitude, prostituting it.

quality can not be defined as absolut thing, but as personal yes its possible.. sector666 gave a nice example for personal definition for therm "quality". now what we call "quality" product in mass point of view - the product that fit definition of quality of most indivividuals from mass, its enough to have 51% saying this is quality shit for saying this product is a sucess. IMO.

Simon succeds becouse he started a long time ago, and he had talent even then. He began creating music when the art was still young. |
