Hello everybody!
I wanted to make a more meaningful topic for this thread, but I don't know how that effect is called... :/
Anyway -
I wanted to know how to make that effect that chops the sounds in a beat-like fashion.
Like in Psycraft's track - New Move (00:22)
or in Mike A's sample: http://www.psygarden.be/~mike/audio/MikeA-PMKabbesaDEMO.mp3
around 00:27
I was thinking it could be a Midi-Gate that is set on controlling an Audio channel, but alas - I only know what it DOES, not how to use it proparly (I'm kinda new to cubase).
Any help is welcome.
Good day,
itai |

Well...
1st way is the Midi-Gate ,like you said , put the midi-gate into the effect and than open a midi channel and put the midi gate into this midi channel.
play with the machine and write the notes of the cutting.
2nd way is an audio file (like Mike A did) ...
Take a ready-made ( ) audio wave and click on the wave itself. you will get a list : go to Audio -> Event To Parts
Than Split it with the Misparayim 1/16 or 1/32 on the beat and Mike A just added a delay to it
Have Fun & Let me hear the result man...
Yoake.

Yip, i'd go with the midi-gate option. Use it as an insert effect on an audio channel in the mixer, then you can select the midi-gate as an instrument on a midi-track in the project-window. Use the attack and release controls to get those nice and tight choppy sounds. It's also nice to use a midi-controller for fiddling with the release, this is an intuitive way of using this effect musically. I can also recommend importing a midi-file from a rex-file (a breakbeat for example) and use it to trigger the gate -> with some experimentation you can get some really funky sounds with this trick.
Greetz from beyond the gate,

hey hey
If I remember correctly, that part is made with Cubase Chopper and automation on the mix or depth, turning it on and off every few beats. But that's a lame way to do it.
Right now what you should do is like this (assuming you're using Cubase):
Take the sound you want to chop and put the Midi gate effect on it.
Load this preset into the Midi gate:
http://www.psygarden.be/~mike/gate.fxp
Next create a midi channel and send the output of the channel into the midi gate (it will appear as one of the options in the output).
Now, if there's a note you will hear the sound. So just write notes in the midi gate channel and build your groove!
