Do you consider your environmental/carbon footprint?

It seems to be preoccupying my mind a lot, about whether and under what conditions I would fly to a party, as I am starting to get offers of overseas gigs..

Just wondered what your thoughts were?

Sometimes, but the way I see it is: The plane's flying with or without me, I can't swim that far, and my overall carbon footprint is a lot smaller than the average in my day to day life.

Just a few flights will knock your carbon footprint up an order of magnitude.

I think we have to own up to the fact that large psytrance festivals in exotic locales have quite an environmental impact (even if you don't consider CO2 emissions to be that big a deal).

So, how can this moral quandary be resolved? The common argument is that the good that goes on at these events--the connections that are made, the new ideas that are shared--conceivably inform and inspire those that attend to go out into the world and make it a better place. This sort of thing is pretty much impossible to quantify and depends entirely on whether your glasses are rose-coloured or something else.

My approach? I try not to fly too often and tend to stay a while when I do. I am also engaged in research pertaining to climate change at my university so I am at least somewhat involved in working toward a greater understanding of what is going on with our planet these days. On some level it almost feels like the best thing some people can do for the planet is simply off themselves, but that's not a positive approach. Better to involve yourself in making a meaningful difference in how this story plays out. And if you happen to take a few trips here and there, don't sweat it.

That's a good point.

The few times I've traveled overseas, I made it a point to stay a while, plan to visit places and people, and broaden my knowledge a bit about the world and where I was. In other words, make the most of it.

Yeah, when I used to believe it unquestioningly, it didn't used to be an issue. However now I wonder about the "good" that goes on at these events, it makes me wonder if I should even leave the frontdoor let alone country.

There is this organisation : http://www.myclimate.org/

They offer "CO2 compensation".. that means you can calculate online how much CO2 you caused by flying, driving, living and they calculate an amount of money you need to give them so that they can invest it in green-projects that will compensate the same amount. For instance building a solar powerplant somewhere etc.

I don't know how effective that is and after all you still caused the CO2 and only help to not cause more somewhere else so it is not really a compensation.

Anyways. I compensate my full CO2 footprint, including occassional flights, there with a monthly payment. Furthermore I have a monthly payment to WWF for the "buy rainforest to protect it" programme.

You can allways critizise the effectivness of ANY help organisation and stories about how badly the money is used are all around etc. But I think it's still better than doing nothing so I decided to trust in those organisations.

Moreover I try to do my part as a school teacher and I tell my students a lot about that stuff. They are very open and receptive to it. I simply have practice what I preach otherwise I wouldn't be credible and my students are asking a lot of questions and if I don't preactice what I preach I lose their respect very quickly.

Another thing I do of course. I buy mostly local, fairtrade and organic products don't eat meat and as much it is possible I always check if any material as wood for instance comes from sustainable sources.

I'm definitly still not doing all possible and I'm only able of doing all that I do now because I live in a very cheap house and have no children etc. Because trying to be environment-friendly is always more expensive than being not and always also invloves making sacrifices.

On any given day, more than 87,000 flights are in the skies in the United States. Only 35 percent, or just over 30,000 of those flights are commercial carriers, like American, United or Southwest. On an average day, air traffic controllers handle 28,537 commercial flights (major and regional airlines), 27,178 general aviation flights (private planes), 24,548 air taxi flights (planes for hire), 5,260 military flights and 2,148 air cargo flights (Federal Express, UPS, etc.). At any given moment, roughly 5,000 planes are in the skies above the United States. In one year, controllers handle an average of 64 million takeoffs and landings.

do i feel bad for flying twice a year? no. not at all. maybe if i had private jet lol.
with that i strongly believe rules and regulations should be very strict and to be enforced hard.. factories airlines and all the major poluters , as well rainforest massive clearing is the real problem cause we had air filters (trees) and we simply cut those too..

and sure wish that flight will be cleaner with technology goes forword..           www.sattelbattle.com

so you say the existance of a big bad justifies a small bad?

As long as there are others who do worse things than the bad things you do yourself you can do it?

I think what he's trying to say is that we're underestimating the planet's ability to take care of itself.

It's survived worse catastrophies than humans, it'll shake us off like a bad case of fleas when it's had enough. ( <3 George Carlin)

nope i am a trend watcher and invest in entertainment companies & technology companies
i made a killing in the late 90's because people and governments around the world felt the Y2k bug was real, prior to that my dad and uncles invested in companies that made Hammers as they knew the Berlin wall had to come down and to do that people in Germany would buy a lot of hammers. My grand-dad also invested in some nuclear technology sometime after the hiroshima drop and that company is a leading microwave manufacturer.
every couple of years we help companies and governments design a fear due to which consumtion goes up and if that doesnt work we tell the governments that make it a law a policy and you guys sign it and then suddenly (not for us but for the world) a Nobel prize winning scientist comes along and fixes the bug.
by the way i have invested in those carbon footprint calculators...thanks to you and others like you my Cleantech portfolio gave me 38.34% return in the first quarter itself.
By the way i also own stocks of the following:
Halliburton
Exxon Mobil
Shell

and for my community responsibility i donate to Greenpeace an annual of $20,000

i sleep so peacefully when i have shpongle blasting on my non-energy saving B&O soundsystem all night and my led-lights in the room set the mood just right for the ladies          When death comes to your doorstep, make sure you are alive

I invested in wacky wall walkers.

My investments have gone nowhere but down ever since.
