A friend of mine recently got 3.2k euros. He wants to get every piece of hardware (excluding plugins) to make a studio. Monitors, sound card, synth, midi controller, audio treatment, DJ equipment (CDJ) and the rest. He's looking for the top notch equipment he can get for that amount of money. Would appreciate some feedback.

Cheers

3200 it s gone fast..i would use software and not invest money in hardware at first or if he find second hand good offers on synths, but priority is the room and the monitors for sound quality imo

Hm, I think in the last 3 years since I'm into music I did spent around that amount of money for music stuff. And I am far away from having a "studio"...           My first track:

it depend what are the priorities, for making psy tunes, i would invest in monitors in the 1000/2000 range , would check adam or focal offering , maybe dynaudio.
thatt the only brands i know maybe there is some better deals quality/price ratio .
listen to adam a7x / a8x , focal cms 65 ,focal solo , dynaudio bm6a by curiosity i would check KH120 and genelec .

sound card it don't really matter at the begining as long as it s stable and have the features you need .

synth i would check virus b/c/snow/ti
nord g2 engine/modular or nord 1/2
waldorf XT
slim phatty
and more..
monitor the second hand market at your place to find good deals..

he will ahve lot of extra thing to buy that he dont think right now.. like cables, maybe a midi interface. stuff like this..
i would start with softsynths and maybe just one hardware like a virus..but it s overused setup...nothing special i would buy more "exotic" stuff personaly , but it s a bout taste .

and treat the room each month adding a few traps.. it will cost him less than smoking

don`t forget a sequencer

generally i would go for software as well..

a good pc, sequencer of choice, some softsynths like u-he Diva | Zebra , Lennardigital Sylenth..a nice EQ like Sonnox EQ , a nice compressor like Plugin Alliance Vertigo V2 , ISM Bazzism for Kicks, Reverb usually a good one comes onboard your sequencer. Maybe a nice FX Bundle like u-he uhbik..

like POM mentioned, the rest goes into speakers and room treatment.

an interface like Echo Audiofire
and a midi controler like Cakewalk A-300 pro or some Akai stuff for instance..

if he wants to do recordings he would obviously need an interface with more inputs, maybe one or two mics...and soon he would need another 2-3 k           -------......-------...-..-..-..-.-.-.-.-

Start with a good computer, soundcard, monitors, accoustics, sequencer and then add synths if you have money left.

Don't buy everything in one go. Just buy the stuff you need as you start building.           soundcloud.com/supergroover

if he already has a computer, then i would spent, say, 800 for soundcard, 200 - 300 for headphones and all the rest for monitors. For all the other gear i would wait for next 3k euros to come )           http://soundcloud.com/aedem

I agree with this, in this order.
Me, i'v been spending tens of thousens since 2000 to this hobby and still i'm missing mostly everything what i wanted
Try to do more personal testing to tools you are going to buy before you invest them, thats one way to save money, not buying staff that fast..

Like last time i bought a Cubase, and still i'm using only FL. Having Cubase only for mastering is maybe little bit too expencive..

The first 1500 go for Adams A7X, then I would suggest a decent PC win 7/64 bit, another $1000 gone, finally a soundcard, a midi keyboard, probably Cakewalk or Akai since Novation 2slmkii Keyboard is too expensive at this point and good cables and your friends money is gone. Since RME would be too expensive for the soundcard I can recommend MOTU as cheaper alternative... the driver of my microbook 2 works flawlessly on mt Laptop...
