Here's a general rule of thumb for volumes before mastering (ideally the mastering process will bring the overall volume to 0db).:

Max Overall Volumes:
Bass/Kick: -8db
Bass/Kick/Percussion: -5db
Everything: -3db

Figuring this out is as simple as soloing the tracks you want to find the volume on. Also, remember that the kick should always be the loudest component of your track (about -7db).

For overall track compression, you need to make sure it is not constantly compressing the volume.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

There are plenty of tracks where the kick isn't anywhere near being the loudest component that sound great. The bass is a bit louder than the kick in almost all of my mixes.           You believe in the users?

+1 on Kanes word , same here
theres no rule around to say where it should be, plus there are the transients of the kick, you can put a bassline at -12db and a kick at -17db and still the kick jump out of the track, because of its transients. its very important and recognized by ear, if you look at the meters and put that kick for example at -12 or -13, just because the bass is there,, maybe/probably will be just awful sounding or too loud for that mix

ive followed that advise in the past and really believe is of the worst advises you can give to an inexperienced/beginner, probably 90% of the mixes will be clipping this way
..
for example building a mix at -20db gives you so much space and room to make it louder while track is going, youll never clip and you ll have much more headroom at the final stage, plus the bass is sounding super this way.
Overall track compression is not something you really want to do while mixing, except you refer on mastering

Don't worry about having things too loud, worry about having the best balance you can. Leave some headroom and don't mix by numbers, mix using your ears and don't mix at a loud volume as your eardrums tightening up.
**Never mix with compressors and limiters on the master channel.**
**Use the kick as a reference to mix everything else**
One thing I ALWAYS do is turn the master fader all the way down and then start pushing it slowly up to the point where I start to hear the main (loudest elements) of the track.
It helps a lot identifying if your kick is too loud (or too low) for example.
Its perfectly fine for your tune to peak at, say -3dB. The mastering process will bring it up to CD standard level later on anyway, so don't worry about that.

Be consistent and work towards finishing tracks, but also take a few days programming odd sounds. Spend time playing around with your synths and try to make that unorthodox synth patch that adds that psychedelic weirdness.
For me, sound design is just as important as the notes I am going to play.

Listen to your tunes again and again. Do it by 16/32 bar segments. If you are getting bored of them soon, you are not there yet.

And if you like doing the odd naughty thing, listen to your music stoned. Some things that sound a bit repetitive when you're straight, grab you by the face and pull you into your monitors, when you are stoned.
Don't forget that this music is not aimed for people to sit on their couches and read the newspaper on a sunday morning, its aimed for people that are off their tits on a dancefloor and are begging to be slapped silly from the beat.

You won't always be in the mood to make music. Don't force it.

Let inspiration be your guide.

Think about your music away from your work station and you will find substance. By all means practice your production but don't let your production become a game of solitaire.

Loudness and presence is two diffrent terms. When we do dancemusic the kickdrum should have the front seat followed by the bassline. This doesnt automaticly mean that the kicks volume is higher than the bass'.

But when i work solo it is always laid back music and there the kick could be a co-star in the entire mix.

In the session view, extend the mixer up a little so u can view dB, probably theyre hidden for u now.. Also if u want more precise metering I recommend sonnalskis Free G, put it on master channel..           http://www.facebook.com/xrayzproductions

whats about volume?
i heard that the volume shouldnt be the same all time of you instruments.

example my song leads are all the same volume,
but i heard that this is wrong, because you have to
shape out the important mainleads with volume at the right time of the song... so that the listener can
FEEL the song, and not just hearing a static sound.

is that right? can anyone exemplify this again for me? ^^

PS: to those "WEEDers"... not everyone smokes dope.
what i´ve learned is that dope kills your emotions, if you do it every day...
it also can ruin you live, I KNOW WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT.
so explain how to make a good track without emotions?
my advice is, use it wisely

cheers
