I've recently been using ableton live because I like the fact that anything can be saved as preset. It could potentially be an extremely fast workflow. I am just not wanting to mess with session view. I could much rather work in arrangement view however in order to draw in my midi and audio in there is very cumbersome. I've tried looking at videos on doing it but it seems the only way to initially get your loop there is to record it from session view or to drag and drop it from the browser window. I do not understand why I can't just draw my loop in like with any other daw like cubase.           http://www.youtube.com/user/trawhi (tutorials)

if i understand correctly you mean this (maybe) : go to arrangement view -> choose your midi track and mark a free area (dragging with left mouse button) -> then right click on the yellow area and click "Create Midi-Clip" -> then doubleclick on this new pattern and draw your notes as in session view.

did you mean that? if not -> watch tom cosm's tutorials! i guess you'll find all answers there

Yes what he said... you can also drag select with mouse then CONTROL+M

Remember the lenght you selected is going to be the lenght of the new loop... if you want just a 1 bar loop select just a bar, or two, or moar.

thanks guys, ableton is just so powerful being able to save every clip etc. i wanted to get away from FL for a while and give it a shot. i just dont feel working in session view is right. i lay a track out as i go so it doesnt work well for me. i also like to edit clips etc as i go. thanks guys!

what about adding in an audio clip i have without having to drag and drop or record it into arrangement view?          http://www.youtube.com/user/trawhi (tutorials)

You should seriously look into the power of Follow Actions in the Session View. It can allow you to make really complex patterns using small, simple clips, especially when you mess with Legato Mode. I do almost all my tweaking them jam out on the APC while recording into arrangement. If I don't like a part of the outcome, it's easy to go in and edit that part.

I also really enjoy dropping preset chains into a rack and throwing it into a folder for later. You're right, the ability to save EVERYTHING and re-incorporate it into another project is really amazing.

I am getting sound out of the sequencer and sound when I do a midi clip in session mode however I am getting no sound when I create a midi clip in arrangement mode. It shows the clip but it is not playing the midi I put in.

EDIT: Nvm fixed with session button. Getting used to it sorry guys for dumb questions. Quite different than cubase or fl either one.

I was just wondering about this last night when I saw about recording from session into arrangement...makes me really, really fucking want that APC more than I already do, if that is possible.

You find that you mainly arrange in that fashion and then make minor edits in the arrange view afterwards?

Yes, I enjoy it a lot more that way, and I can keep all my session clips where they are to use them later after I've rendered a specific sound

Here is a video of some guy using the APC40, a bunch of session view clips with follow actions settings (with what is probably a few arrangement clips in the background), and FX.

If he had wanted to, he can record everything you see him doing into his arrangement view in realtime.
