If you were scheduled to play a 2-hour chillout set on the first night of a summer festival, at 9pm, what kind of chillout set would you play? (Sunset is at 8:45pm, it will nearly be a new moon, and uptempo mainstage starts at 10pm.)
Dark & Dubby? Groovy and uplifting? Completely beatless, to build anticipation for the first uptempo beats at the mainstage?
I've done dark & dubby, transitioning to "powerful beats" during this timeslot before (yes, I was booked for the exact same timeslot 2 years in a row), but I'm looking for a new direction, hence this post...
Any suggestions/inspirations appreciated! |

I presume that if you are an opener, you won't have too many show-judging ears. I'd go with a gradual fade from slowish to uplifting. Building a sort of an anticipation...

imo u should reach the venue , read the crowds, get immersed into the whole vibe, blah blah and then decide for yourself ....
iam saying this from personal experience .....many times i try to plan and choose certain must play tracks for my gigs ...but once iam there all that goes into the bin ....i seriously cannot be sure of what ill be playing till the final moment

Well it's also somehow depending on who'll be playing after you, if the guy plays tech-trance in example i'll end up with some Downhill stuff in example, if he plays psycho stuff then yalla for BoOm Devil's "Rumble" that stiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiill works so nice usually, if it's a proggy deejay then i'd place 1-2 elektroïzed track...
In the beginning well, sunshiny vibes if the sun is shining, and Fluke's "Blue Sky" if it's raining (hehe i wannaaaaaa see the bluuuee sky), and then freestyle !!
As a matter of concrete example, next week I'll be playing outside on a big terrace during the "Day of the Music" between 7 pm to 9 or 10 -don't remember hehe (in France everybody can play music in the streets that day , June 21st) and right after me there is someone playing Elektro-Techno.. So I'll be playing ethno stuff in the beginning I guess, while people are eating on the terrace and then when the night approaches some more industrial chill out (but still gentle) and end up with 1-2 elektro track and 1-2 proggy tune (introducing some Fat Form records material)..
Voilà !

then go in a new direction...
play something you might not otherwise play and your crowd might not otherwise hear. dig out some oldies, or something unexpected that might turn a few heads. explore around the edges a bit...
good luck

start with
bad religion: 21st century (digital boy)
that'll take the edge off nicely and give a whole new direction for your dj set
p.s. somebody should really rmx this track.
maybe some fat breaks... m-mmmhh
