Some people do prefer the Phatty over the Voyager. Its all about tastes.

Regarding the Phatty sample: I recorded the midi file, then simply chose the notes to copy over. The pattern has 3 notes and out of the root note, there are 3 different velocity settings. So I just selected 6 notes to build the bassline loop.

Usually I just take one sample for each note and and after I've reconstructed the pattern with that sample I edit the volume for each note manually to get the groove going.

indeed it dont sounded great like this, almost like a free runing osc.
to pick good sample just use a audio editor as it s not easy to know wich note will be good just by earing it. select samples with the osc phase at zero degree but after depends what sound you go for..

That's how I do it here as well.
And on lower notes it take a little more time to find the right one, because the phase rarely hits zero degrees on the attack.

yes it s a pain ,i sample probably 30 or 40 notes then it s easy to see how the osc phase change in time with the audio editor reconstruction waveform, when it s close to zero i zoom and exctrat the note ,i have find it dont have to necessary start at zero exaclty, when it s close it s good enough..after depends what sound.. some like to adjust phase so it s not at zero or 180 to get a clickier attack, never really liked it for psy bass, but for drums it s usefull.

By the way the best sounding note is not the one closer to 0 degrees on the attack, Just make sure you choose one sample for each note (at each filter settings) and build your bassline on that. Find the best sounding sample at each note for each filter setting, then use that to build the loop.

# 1, 3 and 2, sound very well, in that order and kick fit perfectly with basslines.

Nectarios you can share the project with us? So we can study and learn more about bassline construction.

Thanks for great topic.

the mid/high of the 8 sound very digital ,was surprised many like it. this test is a bit flawded in term of result as you can judge by listening with the kick and vote for the one that drive it best (how the synth is programed matter a lot ) or listening the bass in solo and vote for the raw caractere and for this i find 8 really fail. personnaly my fav are 1 and 5 in term of caractere and don't really like any of the other raw sound for psy bass but 2 and 3 are decent but not the holy grail .

Its not a test to judge once and for all, which one is best. I could have had the filter a little bit different on one synth, than the other, which favored it in some people.

I made the first few bars of just the bassline, without a kick and then with a kick, just to show both the bassline on its own and with a kick. I could have used a different kick that favored different basslines than the ones it did work with.

Its just a small demo, of a small aspect of bassline programming for each synth, not THE decisive test of which synth is best.

Personally I did not think sample 8 was anything special, but as the saying goes, "one man's garbage is another man's treasure".

What this test showed to me, is that most people just like digital synths more, these days. Which is fair enough, every one likes what they likes.

yeah maybe you re right, could be part of the explaination of why so much psytrance don't sound good to me.
could be also cause for lot of ppl using a 303 plugin or the real thing is the same hence then no wonder i don t like the sound of lot of psytrance..if for these guys the small pourcentage of quality don't matter ..it will always sound kind of compromised and amateurish .

Which is why I am obsessed with using hardware and using lots of analog synths and FX, even if people can't tell the difference, or simply don't like that sound, I love it.

There is nothing wrong with that though, people like it, some people got into psytrance when it was all Virus presets and love that sound. Its what people have grown to like. Its like when I got into dance music and all I was hearing was real analog synths with space to breath in a mix.

Different generations, different tastes.
