Well, this post might seem strange,
but I have recently found that many people that share my taste in progressive psy and uk progressive seem to also like, just like me, cheesy music from the late 70's, for example Barry Manilow (Copa Cabana), carole King (It's too late), Bee Gees (Nights on Broadway) or that really cool song by Glen Campbell "Rhinestone Cowboy".
I bought a lot of those records at used Vynil stores and kept them hidden, but to my amazement a lot of my friends that listen to progressive seem to really dig this stuff, too.
I am wondering how these two different kinds of music are connected that people who like one almost always seem to like the other.
If you are into the following artists or labels:
Son Kite, Antix , Atmos, Vibrasphere, Buzz, Infusion, Release records, ACDC, Sunkissed Progression, Bedrock etc...
tell me, do you like cheesy 70's music as well?

No, 70's were awful.
Except for Led Zeppelin and Jimmy H, everything was quite crap.
IMHO!

I like 70's progressive rock: Camel(!),King Crimson,Pink Floyd,Mike Oldfield
As well as some more avant garde stuff like Magma and Philip Glass.
Maybe I like 70s cheesy music, but I don't know it yet |

No, I hate the cheesy end of 70s music.
Thats probably because I love (and indeed DJ - yes - in clubs, for money) the non-cheesy end of 70s music :
graham central station, sly and the family stone, the meters, the commodores, average white band, quincy jones, the headhunters, etc.
To me the whole disco thing is basically taking this amazing funk and over-producing it so much that it lacks everything which originally made it great. (That is , mostly - there are some disco tracks which are awesome, like "off the wall" album or some of the saturday night fever soundtrack (eg "a fifth of beethoven"))

I love Sly&the family Stone and the Commodores as well, super funky, or that theme song from the TV show Swat rules!!!!
But then I also really like the Love Boat song, and to my surprise im not the only one amongst my circle of prog head friends....
Oh, and Timmy, Philipp Glass rules anyway, but thats a whole other class of music.

Newsflash for the 70's - 80's disco haters:
Without Disco there would not have been any early House (Detroit ect). And whithout the early House trance incl. Goa trance would not have existed.
So we can indeed thank the "cheesy" Disco for our existance
There's been made amazing quality disco and indeed a lot of amazing funk. Without those music genres we would properly still have a rock'n'roll dominated world. One things's for sure. Disco is the father of House and trance.
