well it's not a production question but i don't know where to ask but would be nice to have some music related tips.
well, i bought myself an amd64 bits, i always thought it would be for the future when windows 64bits releases. is this true? or applications which support 64bits run on a winxp sp2 32bits release? what are the main advantages of 64 bits, in music production?

yeah i'm an hardware noob thanks in advance.

in music production the benefits of 64 bits are some to none. Basically 64 bit processor means that it can handle 64 bit integer numbers much better than 32 bit one. VSTs use mainly 32 bit floating point, so there is no direct benefit of 64 bits. In fact, as most of the software is 32 bit like the os, you might feel that you bought something that you don't have use for.

Amd64 is a very powerful processor, and i would have chosen that too. Equal intel processors are slightly more expensive and much more hot.

Yes this is correct. It means that you can now run Windows XP64 and in the future you will be able to run Windows Vista.

Note that there are reasons not to run XP64 now. The main reason would be the fact that many companies havn't written 64 bit drivers for their products yet.

On the other hand, you can run Sonar x64 on Windows XP64 if your soundcard and all the other devices in your system have 64 bit drivers. SOnar x64 has the bit bridge technology. This enables 32 bit plugins to run in a 64 bit environement. So all your 32 bit VST plugins will work.

The biggest advantage is probably larger memory acces. In theory up to a terabyte but in practise 16 GB on most motherboards. The other advantage is faster processing. Tests have shown procesing power increase between 0 and 30% depending on the type of project and the plugins used.

Don't confuse 64 bit audio with 64 bit operating systems. 64 bit audio can be done in a 32 bit OS (like in Sonar 5 including VST 2.4 support in Sonar 5.2).
