im doing a 6/8 beat and am going crazy with some of the locations of the percussions... the stuff thats on kick is ok, the snare is ok. but the open hi- hat sounds off no matter where i put it.
what is the correct location for the open hi-hat on this kind of beat?

try quantizing to 1/4t. if i understood correctly, you want to keep the bpm steady, and put 2 hats between the kicks, instead of regular 3 in 4/4 beat, right?
something like:
k - - k - - k - - k - -
c c - c - c - c - c c c
- o - - o - - o - - o o
- - - s - - - - - s - -
maybe?
i remeber hallucinogen made a couple of tracks with quantization change, which sounded wicked. http://myspace.com/voxproject |

well it depends, if you switch from 4/4 to 6/8 keeping 8th notes at the same value then yeah, the track will get a lot slower.. because there will be 3 8th notes to each kick instead of 2.
that's why i wondered if his "6/8" was just 4/4 but using 1/8th note triplets is this track: http://ip23.dyn181.pacific.net.hk/24317.m3u

so just regular 8th triplets?
hihat on the third 8th, or second - whatever you like more... since you have less space between the beats - no space for a fourth 1/16th.

heh, here i was trying to sound all educated since all the times people asked about 3/4 beat they were corrected to actually say 6/8....
guess i made a bit of an ass out of myself... ---> conclusion: next time im going to be a bit more ignorant

I think you said it ... people always confuse triplets with 3/4.

i reckon in 6/8 regular offbeat hi hats sound lame... you'll probably have to do them in their own little rythms between the other sounds. Actually if you pull this off it sounds quite cool coming out of 4/4. The way i did took a bit of time to write in but i kind of split the hats on the off beat in 4/4 so i had two shorter sounding ones and then alt-dragged them slighty through each repetition till i had what they were going to be playing in 6/8 then changed the kick and the snare... works really nice if you have pretty trippy sounding hi hats. |

excus the ignorance but is 6/8
a) k-----k-----k-----k-----k-----k-----k-----k
or
b) k-------k-------k-------k-------k-------k
and 4/4 is
k--k--k--k
?

Its the first one. 6/8 means that every beat gets 1/8 of the measure and there are six beats in the measure. so
K-2-3-4-5-6-K-2-3-4-5-6-K-2-3-4-5-6...
^_________^_________^_________
with the accents being the downbeat and in a triplet rhythm.
Looks weird in the sequencer, sounds weird too. My favorite time signature by far

yes... it's a rythm, rather than just a quantize.
