Some have done "5.1 live sets" meaning taking a master channel and putting a decoder on it. None has been released as far as I know.

Surround mixing is a whole other level of mixing. You have to take into consideration that you might get a lot more phase cancellation than in stereo, due to the way the speakers are arranged. There's the tip           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

Well, then you have it, basically mixing music is similar to film, at least in 5.1
The same rules apply, at least most of the time.

I have been trying to get people here to experiment with 5.1. They all seem to be hooked on stereo(including labels), and considering many don't even have 5.1 home systems I think no one really bothers...

WHICH IS A CRYING SHAME !!!

we are planning a surround party in london in winter...

it will probably be quadraphonic. it seems to be the best compromise.

a couple of well known artists already signed up... and looking for a few more

mixing music in surround is fun, but imho it's easier to write in surround from the start. and much, much more enjoyable!

@ upvas yehh ur point is very true its due to lack of the 5.1 system accessebilty they are stuck with stereo..and u have to be always be in centre and listen to it...hmm quadraphonic will be better. i mean better in terms of listening position ppl need not have to face always in front....and also i think there are no much releases bcoz of the release medium...but yehh there wont be much of a problem if its a digital dwnload ...

yehh i have mixed movie clips which also includes back ground score..but yehh this will be my first exclusive 5.1 surround sound psy trance mix...i have finished my production on abelton..need to start mixing on IKON console...btw i was looking for any 5.1 track which has been released??so that i can atleast get a rough idea..hw does it sound

@ aeon for sure its fun ...but i am just mixing in surround..well after the mix is done will send it to u for some reviews...all teh best good concept

more info please

thanks

dumb question i suppose, but where does one start for 5.1 production? (besides a 5.1 surround system)

do you need a program for it? hardware? some weird alien device?

I still reckon 5.1 beats quadrophonic by a long shot.
Would love to hear your mix when it's finished. Mind you, did you have to rub the IKON in?

Jealousy !!!! I want one too....           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

i chose quadraphonic because it's much easier to implement.

everyone will come to their own conclusions i guess... here's how i thought about it:

firstly, there's no point in having a .1 channel - any decent rig will already put out loads of sub, and we write our music with anything below 100hz to be coming out the main stereo pair. so there's no point having an LFE channel at all.

secondly, why do we need a center front channel? we already have stuff panned center anyway, and where would you put it, underneath the stage?

thirdly, a quad setup is appealing because all you need is four stacks... and stacks tend to come in pairs in fact the way we have talked about doing it you would have a regular rig like usual, then two smaller stacks (for left and right rear channels). the stacks would be smaller because i don't think we'd want much bass coming from the rear channels... no point in having long waveforms bumping into each other, bass will penetrate from the front anyway.

so the idea is that the rear channels are fed through a delay which is used to calibrate the setup to the room size; and they have a crossover set to stop too much bass coming through.

i thought about it a lot last year and that was the most practical solution i could come up with... in terms of actually doing it at a party without too much hassle.

thats where the .1 comes into play since most kicks and basses are are mono or work fine mono then you have the subs hooked up as a mono channel
