I'm looking into mixing using the surround sound capabilities of Cubase SX, just wanted some basic info on what I'm going to need to upgrade my studio to mix in 5.1 correctly.
Will I need an external encoder/decoder to convert the output from SX, will I need a specialist 5.1 card instead of the RME 96/32 I had planned to get?
Any advice would be very welcome, thanks in advance |

You will need 5 monitors and a sub monitor too all set in a good acoustic room.
you can connect each output to each monitor... that's it.

i havent done it before so i might be mistaken.,
but i think that for music you can do with 4 (good) monitors (2 front, 2 rear).
if you finish a track you can just upmix it to 5.1
because the sub channel can be fed by the low component of the main surround pairs and the middle speaker can be fed with whatever is between left front and right front.
is this good reasoning?

thanks for your thoughts, glad to hear that I don't have to spend a small fortune on a Dolby encoder/decoder as well as 5.1 monitors (phew!)
thanks
