HHHmmm hi !....I'have some question...iwant to upgrade my pc to new one...and just don't know...how much ram to buy...2 gigs of 1066 mhz or 4 gigs as iknow...4 gigs useful in 64 bit windows...but idont know if for cubase its the best solution...just never worked in vista 64...and xp 64 platforms...
As iknow...good idea 4giga of ram in 64 platform but idont know if all my plugs and all my cubase stuff will work good enough, without problems... 32 bit platform... can use only 3 gigs of ram... |

Just to chime in, the max XP can use is 4 GB, but physical devices like video, bios, etc, get addressed into memory first, so they subtract from the windows useable memory.
For those looking to get the absolute most memory, I mention this so you understand that using a 64 MB vide card will give you more useable memory than if you had a 512 MB video card, and especially if you have multiple video cards.
In general, most machines do max out around 3.2 - 3.4 GB.

well this is false info u give my friend.
windows adresses 3.2g of ram like said before and this is a limitation of all microsoft 32bit os.
that limitation has nothing to do with shared memory gpus or any other memory relavent equipement.
ur example comes true with shared memory gpus like some mobile cards and very cheap desktop cards meaning that if u have 3.2g of ram and the card uses 64 on board and 256 shared it will suck us much us 256mb of ram when neccesary!
to sum up.
its good to have 4g of ram even if the system utilises only 3.2g
64bit microsoft os have alot of compatibillity issues with many audio cards and lots of software so even if they look better in paper they luck the good real life performance for now!

Agreed, we could argue the finer points of windows memory addressing spaces, PAE, chipset & bus memory ranges, hardware oversights vs. software limitations, etc, but in the end it's not going to accomplish much. Buy the 4GB of RAM, it's pretty cheap these days to max out your limit.

I think i go for 1600 mhz ddr 3 memory of 2 gigs...its more than enough for cubase work and...mastering... my old pc never comressed my ram over the 60% and it was something like 1256mb of 667mhz ddr(xp sp2)2.4mhz ,asus,(cubase, logic)(bittorent)...4 gigs maybe useful for gamers ...and video- graphical creation softwares ...I know that is cheap in ours days ...,but its not a reason to choose lot of gigs...!!! Ithink more speedy ram ...its more important...than 10 gigs of slow ram!!!...your oppinion??? |

Correct me if i'm wrong, cos i'm not technical geek, but as far as i know, higher RAM frequencies don't affect PC performance in direct way, any RAM works fast, but RAM with higher frequency is useful for overclocking your CPU, because they allow to raise the FSB speed higher.

Exactly higher freq on memory enables higher overclock without using memory dividers when you increase the FSB(front side bus) and the pricetag for DDR3 doesn´t justify the overal performance increasement. They do require a lower voltage than DDR2 which will lower the overall power consumed by the system. Id rather wait until DDR3 becomes more of a standard than we can expect lower prices. One more thing that we need to keep in mind is that MHZ isnt everything
