Up.
Hey ppl. I have a question about these two brands: EDIROL and M-Audio.
The 410 and FA-66 looks similar... IŽd like to know what your thoughts about them...
Better then "wich is the best sc", IŽd like to read some opinions about the products from them in overall...
Edirol or M-Audio?

I use the M-Audio FW410 both in the studio and on stage; it sounds great. Early versions of the drivers were not hugely stable but after M-Audio was bought up by Avid (the same people who own Pro Tools) the next versions of the drivers were much much better. Digidesign obviously think the sound quality of the M-Audio hardware is at a good professional standard as there are now versions of Pro Tools designed to run on it. I have no complaints at all about the 410 for my uses.

At different music forums I read about low out signal of M-Audio sound cards, but if you have mixer with preamp, it doesn`t matter.

i own fw 410 and dont have any mixer.... 2x100w actives plugged in directly and they play loud enough in my opinion... but ive had some minor stability issues, maybe like 1 time in 3-4 months... |

The fw410 is very nice for a home studio. I was looking for a friend and recommended it. I installed it for him and worked with it a bit and it is great.
Compared to the edirol it has one more headphone out(nice for recording), pads for low input signals (i wouldn't worry much about that but it's good to have) , 4 more outputs (great for routing and monitoring and even 7.1 if you please), the midi thru switch (very good for controlling both vstis and external rack synths etc with 1 midi keyboard without moving cables).
The virtual control mixers etc are very nice too and provide you with everything you need.
What Saikozayrus said about the output level is tricky. I don't know and i never thought to look. I tried to find the nominal output level in the manual.pdf but it seems that m-audio does not provide us with such info.....i trust m-audio but since someone is complaining and with m-audio not giving that info in the site and manual there might be something there. I can't imagine why it would not be +4 dbu though...
But either way i think that fw410 is a better box. I looked at the specs of both and it still looks better.
The customer support for both companies is great, i own stuff from both and they are always fast and provide answers-solutions.

The 410 has unbalanced -10db outputs.
But I must say that I used an Audiophile USB before, and the 410 has much more volume.

The ouputs of a soundcard cannot be ubalanced (I THINK!!!- although i'dn't be surprised if you are right SMS), but some cards allow you to switch between the two ---balanced +4dbu nominal or unbalanced -10dbu nominal....---
If they were we would have to use DIs to patch the monitors (at least some active that i've used.... but others accept ubalanced too, oh my...can it be?)
and the fx units if you're using the outs as sends (again those i use have balanced inputs but others...doomed logic!)
YES, you are right, they are -10dbu because it says -10dbu operation on the manual....it must be the time cause i'm normally..... stupider.
Well, to answer to the original question.
If you get the fw410 make sure that your monitors and hardware fx units accept unbelanced signal.
Amazing! |
