What are 303 Lines? I've heard them referred to allot. I was thinking it was when you have a beat (boom boom boom boom) and have a sound play every 1/16 note so it's like: Booom, booom, booom, booom tatatata, tatatata tatatata, tatatata
Is that a 303 line? if not WHAT DO YOU CALL THAT? lots of good psytrance has em. |

The TB 303 synthesizer is probably the first techno/trance synthesizer, and one of the first synthesizers in the world. If I remember it correct, a french guy (don't remember his name) discovered, that if you tweak it's cutoff and resonance knobs while plying the keys, you get a hypnotic sound that wasn't similar to anything at that time (70'-80'). The TB 303 was the corner stone to techno/trance oriented music and till these days you can hear its sound in many tracks (a hypnotic bass line with a lot of slides).
BTW - A nice emulation of the TB 303 is included with Rebirth, which would you to experience with its unique sound.

It was far from one of the first synthesizers in the world, there were tons before it, it was produced from 1982-1984 so it's really not all that old.. the TB-303 was put out by Roland along with the TR-606 as tools to replace a live bass player and drummer.. Of course that didn't really catch on and shortly thereafter these things were basically worthless (you could pick one up at a pawn shop or garage sale for like $20) until of course the acid house scene when yes I think it was DJ Pierre who first used it, now they sell for over $1000.. funny huh? |

yeah i knew about the roland model 303 but. Is there a name for those 1/16 notes going thoughtout so many goa and psy tracks? Or do you just call it ..."those 16th notes"? sometimes even 1/32 beat. Anyone know what i'm talking about? for one beat there will be 4 beats of a 303 acid sound... some times hi-hats, it makes the song sound really fast and energetic... |

goa/trance/newage techno are all 4/4 based.
it makes the basic unit of rythm made of 1/16ths
so sometimes there's a part of 4/8 based [to add some groove or whatever] so it's made of 1/32ths.
is this what u asked ?

I have the MC-505 and I use sometimes 1/16 and sometimes 1/32...
It depends on the groove, the filters you add, the sample, and even the Ring module effects the sound (in synth only)...
So this endless loop of the 16/32 notes is the same loop you like to hear in you stereo player :) |

acurately they should be referred to as quavers, cos if you have a piece of music in 5/4 time, then technically speaking a 32nd is still a 32nd of a bar, and will not therefore be the same as the note length u r referring to (ie: eighth of a beat) but onone talks like that anyway, really |

ok i guess i'll call them quavers, i don't really understand your last post though queen... define Quaver? sounds like quaver is somthing else... I like DJs that have sets full of "Quavers"... sounds so damn good at parties! Wonder what Yuli calls them... maybe we should think of a name for them. Because they are a characteristic of psytrance, just like 303 sounds are or "acid sounds" and just like Boom tss boom tss. THEY NEED A NAME! How about "trance lines" ? i dunno quaver sounds ... wierd.
get this: new american pop music is taking "quavers" or "trance lines" and using them in their new .... songs or whatever they call them... :) people think it's some new sound... *sigh* it is to them i guesss. So if there isn't a name for them... lets discuss a term we could devise! any ideas? |

quaver is the eighth of a note. also means some sort of vibrato on a singer's voice (or a synth's line, whichever the case may be.). |
