hmmm, that's not always tru, there are audio cards that give you the option of lots of tracks at 16 bit or less tracks at 24-bit... it depends on manufacturer and model... FOr this you will have to read the manual, there is no other option... If it is not the case, piXan's explanation is all you need. |

that cant be right...24 bit project isnt supposed to mixdown as audioble .wav....and also it shouldnt be possible to change from 16 bit to 24 bit in the middle of the project without any diffrence!

If you take the exact opposite of everything in the above post, you'll have accurate information
so....if i understand correctly it should be possible to convert all my 16 bit projects to 24 bit simply by loading them and changing that option on cubase???

| The "file" itselfwould be 24bit, but the audio 16bit, so no, you can´t upgrade the sample depth
  Peace and Love, seriously! |

You can change the format of the file by re-exporting it as 24-bit. This won't suddenly give you more detail though as the audio in the new file will be the same as it was before. Projects can contain files of any bit-depth; the only thing you can't really mix in a project is different sample-rates - well you can, but they'll play back at the wrong speed.

Everything you do is already at least 24-bit quality internally to the sequencer (with the exception of 16-bit samples); it just gets exported at different bit-depths depending on the settings in the Audio Export window (or equivalent). I don't know about other sequencers but in Cubase you change the default project bit-depth in the Project Setup window in the Project menu. This determines the bit-depth at which new recordings will be made.
Listening to your 24-bit audio depends on the soundcard drivers. Most audio interfaces only have one set of drivers which will run at 24-bit without you having to do anything. Some cards (eg. Yamaha DS2416, Creamware) have a different ASIO driver if you want to hear more than 16 bits.
