A merry International Mother Earth Day to you all
Earth Day is a day that is intended to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's natural environment. Earth Day was founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in first held on April 22, 1970. While this first Earth Day was focused on the Unite...d States, an organization launched by Denis Hayes, who was the original national coordinator in 1970, took it international in 1990 and organized events in 141 nations. Earth Day is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network, and is celebrated in more than 175 countries every year. Numerous communities celebrate Earth Week, an entire week of activities focused on environmental issues. In 2009, the United Nations designated April 22 International Mother Earth Day.
International Mother Earth Day. It was established in 2009 by the General Assembly under Resolution A/RES/63/278. The Resolution was introduced by The Plurinational State of Bolivia and endorsed by over 50 member states. It recognizes that "the Earth and its ecosystems are our home" and that "it is necessary to promote harmony with nature and the Earth." The term Mother Earth is used because it "reflects the interdependence that exists among human beings, other living species and the planet we all inhabit."
General Assembly President Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann welcomed the creation of International Mother Earth Day, saying: "International Mother Earth Day promotes a view of the Earth as the entity that sustains all living things found in nature. Inclusiveness is at the heart of International Mother Earth Day; fostering shared responsibilities to rebuild our troubled relationship with nature is a cause that is uniting people around the world."

What I want to be more conscious of is using less disposable plastic every day, and any plastic I do discard is taken to recycling.

We are caretakers of our world, and in many ways, we aren’t doing a very good job. We all bear identical responsibility to treat it with respect. Each of us, regardless of economic status, age, gender or any other factor, has an equal stake in protecting it. Yet we carelessly treat the beauty that surrounds us as if it is of no more importance than the plastic and paper and other trash that we heap upon it.
Surely it’s not because we don’t understand how truly beautiful our world is. And we would hate to think it is because too many of us foolishly think it’s somebody else’s problem or conversely, that we might as well trash our community because, well, heck, everybody else does.
Everybody else doesn’t. And nobody should.
While part of our motivation is frugality (which we are sure any business owner can understand), we are sincere in our belief that a smaller format will use less newsprint, resulting in saving thousands of trees and helping our environment.
I ask for your help in how best to convey the reality that action is necessary if we don’t want to leave the next generation a world where it is hard to breathe, where fresh water is the exception, not the norm, where trash covers our roadways so thoroughly even weeds can’t survive.
Go into your yard today. Look around. There is beauty there, and life and probably a lot of potential to make it all even more beautiful and more full of life. Our community is an extension of our own yards. It belongs to all of us, this community and this Earth. And it’s up to us to take care of it, working together to at the very least keep it clean.
On April 22, 1970, 20 million people across America celebrated the first Earth Day. Since that time, there have been laws enacted that have improved our world, but even more important are the individual efforts each of us should take, must take, to keep it not just fit for our own habitation, but for those who will follow.
