People will see a good profit from selling records when Jesus returns and shows everyone he's really Cab Calloway in drag, then buddha shows up and arrests him cuz hes an FBI agent. And then Pam Anderson will do the naked crabwalk.
I figure if im gonna make money off music ill have to find a way to make the beats for nsync or someone like that, or by performing all over as much as I can.
Otherwise, really, there isn't fcukall profit in this biz. So rather than spend the effort involved with copyrighting and selling music Id rather give it away, save me that effort at least, and Im no worse off.

Ok, finally I've made it to this tompic.
Thanks everyone for replies.
Why I asked was this feeling after I released Soundprints for free, which was my first deliberate free release (I released some tracks on free VA's before, though, but that's not quite same thing), that I started to get lots of feedback, at once. The release is being working, same or even better than a CD.
With such huge amount of trance music being released it doesn't matter if the release is being distributed by some official company or you upload it for free - everything is about how good you promote it.
Personally I decided to give more music for free by myself. Sure I will release music on various CDs, but I really like the feeling when it starts working, when someone downloads legit free music and gives feedback.

Well very nice opinions drop here, my personal vision is that slowly the music industry is turning to live and performing to give an answer to the piracy, and is in here from where the artists will see some money, not mainstream artists but underground producers, but how can u get gigs and get a name in the scene?
That's were Internet and maybe spreading some of your music for free could help you to gain some status.

Have found the quality and innovation of both free and paid digital (addictech releases) music to be better than most physical only releases in 2011. People tend to forget the movement is driven by the artists who make the music... this years been exceptionally revolutionary that way.

we're going to see more and more direct to listener solutions that don't function like a blood sucking corporate entity. lots of streaming and subscription solutions coming up also but for musicians looking to connect directly, nothing as effective as things like bandcamp and the very promising vibedeck (still in beta but already usable)

Yidam, exactly. And thanks for Vibedeck, didn't know of it yet. Such things as this and Bandcamp sure can bring some income after one will establish more or less recognizable name on the scene with free, traditional releases and performances.
In the end it is music what really matters. I personally believe if you are talented and your music is good and you want to expose it to public you will be noticed.
