2011: CD releases vs FREE releases

What do you prefer, or would you prefer, as an artist?

Both options have their advantages and disadvantages. Compact disc gives some status to a release, but does it really worth efforts? Everyone will download the release in mp3 or flac, even if he or she then goes and buy the CD into their collection.

Free releases can't be touched and there is no beautiful fresh print smell. If you switch off the computer such music is almost disappearing too... But if everyone downloads any release why construct extra obstacles between the listened and the artist such as CD price and delivery? However if the music becomes free, what consequences may come with such huge change?

Your opinions are welcome.

PS I don't wanna compare CD to digital. I am talking about free vs non free.

I don´t know if its better seek for a label first or make a free album to spread my work first...

free digital release, payable digital release....
free promo cds and payable cd releases...

i think we have space for all
and i think it ll be wise to the artists walk in all those direction ....

also considerin the situation we have today , bout bein hard to sell cds... i think it ll be a tendency to adopt the DO IT YOURSELF... u make ur own cds u make ur own releases and u try to sell them ur self or promo them urself..

i do agree that labels are important thing in the market, and they are most of the time responsable for the name of the artist bein release in the market... BUT considerin the number of the producers we have today and considerin the way the labels have headed...( more of a mafia way.... each label has it own style and it own school that usualy the people around them will be the people who ll join them ) each day s harder for unknown artists to drop in NAMED labels....

so the more producers show up in the scene i think the more the scene will be opened to the DO IT URSELF...

it ll also help to filter the good stuff from the bad stuff...since now we would not have an artist bein recognized almost by the label name...

but dont get me wrong.. im not sayin the labels should die and the artists should show the middlefingers to the labels lol.. im just sayin i think it ll be a tendency to try to do it by urself... since its harder to go to a decent label...

Both ways are good, i guess releasing in CD is like making your music and project solidify in a real object taking you away from the virtual world. Philosophical yada yada

Vermeee i agree with your point totally though i believe it wont work, either you are an excellent musician or an excellent business man, promoter, marketeer, you cant be good at all of them. People will try for shure but it will be sooo fucking hard and time consuming that it wont last.

DIY does not necessarily mean that all the production promotion and marketing are done by the same person, its more about collaboration of people who have same goals but different instruments that alone are insufficient to reach the goal. free DIY release is one easy way to promote music which is not labeled with mainstream artist names etc. when you distribute your music off charge, the possibilities that your music will be heard are a lot bigger than you try to sell a cat in a sack. on the other hands in this way revenues artists get for their music are rapidly approaching 0, but there is a belief that the whole music industry is going to turn to this direction because of so called "piracy' and stuff like that. What would be left for artists is the money for live acts and copyrights (if desired)           In A Society That Has Abolished All Adventure The Only Adventure That Remains Is To Abolish Society

the concept of a label makes sense to me if it is an institution that guarantees a certain quality musical and production wise. plus they care for promotion and set up a special vibe or "style" where people know in which direction things go..

i still buy everything on physical release though just because i like something in my hand to play with and read. makes it more real for me.

Free, feels good cause nobody has to pay to get the music, which is also the case for non-free CDs/digital downloads, they are available for free the next day and most people will download the release from some pirate site, which again is also the case (for some people) who download music that is available on Ektoplazm for free, off pirate sites, cause that is all they use to get their music...go figure...

Non free, is a must if you want to get your music released by a big label. No big labels give music out for free. The amount and level of gigs that one will get (in most cases) is directly proportional to how big the label is that s/he is "signed" on.

About CDs I don't really care, I treasure the 12"s and dubplates of the music I have released a lot more than the music I have on CDs.

Peace out.

well i think a good approach is to pay if u want u know ? to combine with the do it yourself....

lets say we can do digital releases for free but if the listener wants, he can donate money and depentin of the value he gets a cd too

another approach to not fight against piracy coz even havin the cd for free for dload.... some people will still buy a cd if they like it , only for the pleasure of collection or the artwork or some other reason...

but i do agree with the part of that zen mind says ": either you are an excellent musician or an excellent business man, promoter, marketeer, you cant be good at all of them. "

somehow u always will need a label or some promoter behind u to promote u and get u places to play... ;/

a example of the futur could be pay like 20$ dollars and get all the release of the label for one year as digital download..(with at least a album or a va each months and some bonus lp) people will buy music again when it s so cheap that it don t worth it to pirate .

and when the music will be worth buying too that may be one of the issue.
just when i compare the morning full on sound that is a bit inspired from the goa stuff.. except the beats and bassline in many tunes everyhting else fall short compared to all the great goa tunes, it sound not inspired and lot of these tunes would have no success even in 96 .
