Allright here's a question for you guys. I am working on a tribal Progressive tune with tons of percussion. One of the samples is a BIG BIG "TOM" sound. Toms are really heavy in the bass area so how do you typically EQ a TOM to fit into the mix? I managed to cut a lil bit of the very low freq's out of the Toms but it still needs signficant freqs in the bassy areas to retain the meat of the sound.
Second question: I was thinking of possibly sidechaining my tom with my kick. But the kick is already being sidechained (using Waves Comp-sc) with my bassline. Is there a way to sidechain both the bassline and the Toms with the same kick sample? Basically, double-sidechaining?
Much appreciated in advance. |

Well see TOM and BASS in place they both hit and clip as cup which you need to fill with "sand" and "sugar". Top of cup is your limit dB while it doesn't much matters which will be the dominant (in theory) just use your ears. Try to offline process TOM (sample) in place it meets with BASS by EQ or Volume control, then copy paste>.
Yes, create an other kick trigger and sidechain it with whatever you decide.
Kick
Kick Trigger 1 (in bass+kick group)
Bass Channel (in bass+kick group)
Tom (in tom+kick group)
Kick Trigger 2 (in tom+kick group)
Must be more efficient way to sidechain bass out (after sidechain with kick) with tom. Just use my first group pyramid and fit it to more efficient IMHO sidechain.
Cheers

the 2 questions above could work pretty fine, but sometimes the problem is more simple than you can realise, maybe you should pitch shift (add semitones) your sample a little bit until it fits in a better place and get away from the bass or even more simple you could try to use another sample, but i guess you liked this one didn't you? |

in these kind of situations i find ohmforce hematohm to be pretty useful. you can easily move your instrument to an empty space in the spectrum without fucking up the sound too much. i sometimes use it on kicks too |

Unless you have a big tom in the breakdown where there are no other bass elements that occur simultaneously, take some bottom end out of the tom and make it fit in the mix, especially if its a 909 tom, those are bassy fuckers.
Toms are not about big low frequencies anyway, more about tight low mids/mids that cut through.
You can route the bassline and the tom to a buss and then on that buss, insert a compressor that is side chained to the kick.
