Hi y'all
(First time post from a long time lurker (10+ years))
First off, let me tell you all some of my level of experience:
I have played music at a semi-professional level. I have worked as a computer programmer. I have zero training/ education in computer related music stuff (like Cubase).
When Astral released "Ten" I spent probably 6 months trying to make psytrance but gave up when I realized that my computer was simply not good enough. So I forgot about it until a couple of days ago when I realized I actually got a pretty decent laptop these days. And lo, it was fast enough for Cubase and all kinds of VSTIs, and I did not even need to get a real soundcard (yeeee).
So now to my questions:
1. The Cubase MIDI interface. Can I toggle some setting somewhere to see shadows of notes on other tracks on the active track? That would speed things up a lot for me but I cannot seem to find it if it exists.
2. The ReFX Vanguard has some presets that start with "GAT...". What does GAT signify and how are those sounds generated?

On Vanguard, the GAT prefix stands for sounds that usually are gated, i.e., that use the gate effect -> you can find it in the VST interface under "Trance Gate".
To make a nice gating sound, try thinking of a long pad or drone, and use something after to cut the sound up rhythmically.

First of all welcome!
Now i can only answer in your 2nd question cause i have to work with cubase since sx version (Ableton user here )
Well GAT means that these presets have trancegate fx. Just load a preset, tweak it little bit, turn on the trancegate fx play with the pattern, speed and contour knobs and you have a nice gate for your tune!

Thanks.
Should I post this kind of questions in this forum or in the software subforum? |

just select the regions you want to see and open them all together..this will show you all notes and you can even switch in the channels in your single window.
or use a folder track and put the stuff in folders like drums , synth , kick/bass or something..then you only need to open the folder region..
cheers

yeah select multiple midi parts, double click one of them to open.
Yuo will see all midi notes from all parts, make sure you have parts selected in the top panel so that it will show you all the midi notes in the colour of their track
I think by default its set to velocity so all the notes will be red.
