Headphones are a mixed blessing. First and most importantly, they are very dangerous if you are not VERY carefull not to play them too loud. They can seriously dammage you hearing. (And that happens quicker than you think without you feeling any pain).

The main reason to get headphones (except neighbour problems) is because you can get high resolution headphones for much less money than high-resolution monitors. This is good for listening to details in the mid-range and high-range frequencies of your mix. On the other hand, Headphones are close to useless for properly judging the low-end frequencies (those all so important kicks and basses).

Unfortunately I can't give you any advice on headphones models as I don't use any.

I often feel like headphones hurt my ears if I spend all night with them on, I would recommend against it as well, if you are not careful of the volume.

It seems as though with headphones even if it is not really loud, certain frequencies over and over played in loops while you are tweaking away can hurt even if you don't more feel they are loud.

As for Linux sequencers, I regularly use Linux as my OS of choice, and I have tried seriously hard to try to make music with it, but I have had to make the decision to install windows in order to make anything decent.

I will not say it's impossible, but it will take an exceeding amount of effort to compose in Linux.

LMMS, which indends to be an open source free Fruity Loops type program for Linux, shows promise, but try it out and you'll see unless you are a musical genius with plenty of time on your hands, you'll see it sounds like tracker music.

PureData runs on Linux, it is very nice for learning about synthesis, but not very helpful for making tracks, in my opinion.

Maybe try a mac and OSX, as another unix clone, I found it very similar, but with better hopes of music creation. I, myself just broke down and started using Windows for music.
