Stumbled upon a nice article by a guy from Gearslutz:

Quote:

I like to praise free or cheap virtual synths but how about those commercial synthesizers that went totally under the radar ? Of course, it's all subjective. My assumptions may be totally false. After all, I'm not a world class producer so I can only judge plugins by using them, reading reviews, blogs, forums etc.

The concept of this article was inspired by some similar topic created on KvR Audio forum. The point is: there is a group of quality, popular and hyped synths that people people talk about all the time, such as: U-He Zebra, Lennar Digital Sylenth, NI Massive, Camel Audio Alchemy, ReFx Nexus, FxPansion DCAM Synth Squad, Synapse Audio Dune, U-He ACE, Waldorf Largo, NI FM8, Arturia stuff. There is also another group - synths that bring quality on the table too but are much less hyped or got "old". And these are the synths I would like to introduce.

surge sounds very good indeed. the gui design is one of the worst i have seen..
how can you make such a mess to work with?
i vote for zebra as my workhorse           http://www.ektoplazm.com/free-music/stereofeld-frequenzwechsel

Theres still a free beta version of Helix available for download if one looks hard enough.

Kinisis is great fun to play around with, Ive made some gnarly sounds mashing up various analog waveforms, for example one was a Buchla, a Korg Karma, a Prophet and a 303. I was a synthesis-purist poo-pooing at sampled waveform synths before I tried Kinisis and its converted me.

Unique and Glass Viper are both interesting concepts, perhaps they went under the radar because of that, only sparking interest in those patient enough to stop and look closer. Which most egghead plug-junkies arent.

Circle is a neat one too, nice modularish interface and fun playing with circles, lots of options (OSC input for one), but for some reason it didn't really 'wow' me.

Surge is just wonderful. Its really great using 3 FM operators as a single oscillator I found it to be easy as well, and easy to get lost in.           .

and btw, surge's fx section is pretty ok, absolutely usable, especially if you need some weird delay-freq-shift-verbed stuff for psytrance or ambient (sure you want it, lol) and isnt cpu hungry.

Surge is my workhorse as well...love the thing... though, I will check out a couple of the ones mentioned, might be fun to experiment.           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

I dont like the GUI of surge so i dont use it actualy..need to have the feel of something good looking to work long in it..but i guess people have very different opinions on that..

using Zebra, Sylenth and DIVA now mainly..
