Its all a matter of taste, and a wise person once said there is no arguing matters of taste. Taste is opinion, and opinions are like assholes as they say; everyone has one and they all stink 
Personally I like anything that I like, I dont let the speed of the track decide for me. A lot of superfast stuff seems gimmicky to me, but then Ive heard plenty of gimmicky slow stuff! Faster stuff doesnt seem to move me in the same way as relatively slower stuff, its more thrash-headbanging stuff than losing-yourself-dancing stuff to me. Sometimes its nice to headbang though.
Id say my favorite speeds are 148-152 for night stuff.

Yeah, I was just suggesting... If one wants to be an anal fascist freak about BPM and absolutely needs an official guideline, than let's at least work with historical precedent. Trance is a descendant of disco. The American original was played mostly at 144 BPM, the European offshoot was played mostly at 120 BPM.
Or we can just pick a number out of our asses. 128 sounds good - it's 2^7. Seven is a super-duper magic number, isn't it? And 2 is for Adam and Eve. Or God and Devil. Or whatever else is there - ask Xolvexs. So 2^7 is just real killargh. As soon as you hear it - that enlightenment is guaranteed or money back.  |
