This album definately was THE trance release of summer for me.

Mature production, best from what I've heard from Mr. 12 Moons so far, not taking into accout his wonderful Healer sounds.
A release for your mind, soul and for polishing your dancing techniques of course
Wonderful feel throughout the whole cd. Thank you!

Michael Anderson (also known as Healer) has two ways to heal our souls and minds. Here his dance uptempo attitude emerges and entrances the listener with his strange and emotional dance approach.

Minimal, elaborated, morning touch that one is likely to encounter in the dawn of a beautiful day, of a new beginning. I encourage you to dive deep into the waters of this album, to learn about it, turn it upside down and take it in you...and the result will be - purification!

I wrote up a longer review after hearing the album many more times over the last few months. Since it's a positive review, I'm posting it here:

The long-awaited debut album from Swedish act 12 Moons is an incredible piece of pure trance music. The artist has long been known for a string of unique and successful singles on Dragonfly Records. Now after many year of production the full length is finally here...

An album such as this presents an insurmountable problem for the reviewer, for it is best considered as a work of art that simply must be heard in its entirety to fully appreciate. A track-by-track analysis would yield little, as all songs have a clear similarity in style, arrangement, and mood - without suffering from any problems usually associated with such a homogenization. Though it is billed as a progressive sound, 12 Moons has their own distinct style that I feel harkens back to the earliest days of trance music. While progressive today is leaning towards sexy and groovy sounds, 12 Moons presents a deeper and richer sound tapestry that relies on simple beauty to provide charm and appeal.

Few other acts in the history of trance can claim a similarity of sound... Blue Planet Corporation, one of the original icons of trance music, is perhaps closest, though fellow Scandinavian acts Matenda and Human Blue can claim at least some stylistic overlap. No other modern group's sound is quite so clean and innocent however. The organic beats and percussion are often incompatible with most other progressive offerings - mixing it can be tough to accomplish without harming the subject matter. This has a lot to do with the slower speed and the highly dynamic work on the bottom-end, where bass lines lope around like fantastic creatures of myth, in constant motion. The mood on many of the songs found here can be described as serene, delicate, and tranquil. Each song develops with a slow but steady intent, blossoming only when the time is ready, never over-reaching or becoming too drastic. Emotions are conjured from the brilliant arrangement of simple sounds, lush atmospheres, and drifting melodies that go on forever. The end effect, on each and every song, is a startling impression of beauty and wonder.

The album certainly has some highlights for me... the opener Analog Haste is a perfect introduction to the style, Without Within has a staggering degree of emotion expressed through those beautiful chords, and Halo possesses an incredible space age melody like no other. The short ambient piece Interlude provides a nice transition to the distinctly different final track, Flair. This last work lets a long intro with jungle sounds develop into the most energetic song on the album, with a pulsating beat, smoothly oiled transitions, and enourmous depth.

Considerable work has been invested into this debut, an album which listens like a complete story more than most others. The cover art is wonderful, created by one of the guys from Wizzy Noise. It is also remarkable to behold an album just shy of a full 80 minutes by ten seconds. Now I certainly won't claim this album is for everyone... it has a depth to it which I am aware many psytrance fans won't be able to appreciate. But for those of you who are looking unique and charming sounds that promote smiles and sighs, this is highly recommended. It should go without saying that long-time fans of 12 Moons should acquire this whenever possible - it fully lives up to these years of fine singles and compilation releases.

12 Moons – Solid State
&
Healer – Higher Grounds
Candyflip (Greece)

I owe an apology here to Alexis from Candy Flip – CDs somehow didn’t reach us (a possible symptom of something David Morales, of all people, came up with recently, who always gets nervous flying to London with his records because “everyone in the UK is a DJ” and could nick his tunes.) And it’s a good job we all uncovered this, as psyreviews would have missed out on two damn good albums otherwise. Both Healer and 12 Moons are Gothenburg’s Michael Andressen; the former being his ethereal ambient/chillout guise, the latter being a crystalline, dreamy four-to-the-floor incarnation. And it goes a long way: two albums expertly mastered by Son Kite, and the two together showcase a dazzling and overlooked producer. His 12 Moons project can morph together staggering, escalating sounds into an orgasmic cacophony (Analogue Haste, Small Adventures, Without Within). He can keep one foot in “proper” trance, keeping platipus numpties happy (Ovation), get you feeling like you’re in a Berlin squat party (Flair), and mash it all together leaving you feeling nothing but misty-eyed and rabid (Halo, Pilot). Working better at lower BPM’s, you almost wish he’d stick to what he knows best – once we get up to the mid 140s, there’s a feeling that the tunes are suffocated, and that some more space for them to move would be a fine thing. Balance Solid State out, however, with the Healer album, and you’re laughing. Higher Grounds is nothing short of a masterpiece, a killer collection of tear-to-the-eye, real-music downtempo music. In fairness, “chillout” isn’t really the word – although this would sound neat in any backroom, it really comes into its own when you turn down the lights and crank up the volume: sonic incense for your life, background sounds for an art gallery, or just the soundtrack to shag away the end of whatever drugs you’ve consumed this weekend. Psyreviews tips its metaphorical hat to Mr Andressen, a rare talent in a scene dominated by presets and recycled basslines, and retires once more to enjoy Higher Grounds as the hostility of winter nights taps at the window. Bliss.

7 for Solid State, 9 for Higher Grounds.

This album just grows and grows and grows on me, and I think it’s the album I’ve heard the most this year. Without a doubt it’s one of my favourite albums from 2004 (Son Kites “Colours” takes the prize, but it’s extremely close), and rarely have I heard an album that is so enjoyable to listen to over and over again – and from the first to the last minute. Every track has its place, the flow is amazing, and there are absolutely no fillers.

The melodies are beautiful and the soundscapes are uplifting, yet the atmosphere is incredibly deep, and it’s perfectly suitable for an afternoon in the couch with the headphones, but also guaranteed an amazing response on the dance floor. I think it’s as close as today’s trance-music comes to being perfect, and although taste differs, I must say I feel sorry for those who missed it.

No matter if you like full on, progressive or whatever; I suggest everyone who hasn’t done so already, to go out and buy this marvellous album, and spend some time to really dive into it – it’s not to late to discover what an underrated masterpiece it is.

My personal favourite for 2004.

There are many spaces to be discovered by the listener, as the sound continuously evolves from track to track, changing its elements, making this album diversive and versatile. The album unfolds itself slowly into a galaxy of joy and memorable happiness, that will in turn charm you and give you a positive feedback for the next day.

A highly desciplined album which manages to deliver, power and yet remain balanced. Beautifull and at the same time mature.

The music you want to listen to, when you are away from pressure, laying back or dancing with your friends.

Highly recommended for home listening and an acompaniment for the mature set.

Credits to candyflip team.
