My PC works pretty well on WinXP, I can do everything i need, including producing, without any problems...
No games here, though...

partly, it's a habit from the days of less powerful PCs. if you need to squeeze as much as you can from it, then it's definitely worth it to have a separate boot where you can disable tons of windows services that run in the background and take up valuable resources. then you have things like Logitech webcam drivers completely fucking up your usb ports, so your midi controllers are not being recognized. i need to have a webcam to see friends/relatives overseas. since i dual boot, this didn't really affect my DAW boot. but it was still annoying, since i wanted to have some audio software on the normal boot just for scatches or quick jams, where i'm too lazy to re-boot. it's also nice for some minor things, like back-ups (separate images for each os) or for that "production mode on" feeling i mentioned previously.
nowadays, it might not be necessary from performance perspective. but i still think it's a good idea and will continue to set up my environment this way on my current build which i'm about to do.

Jizy:
I had quite the same issue, (i own a Pentium D 2.8ghz 4gb ram 2.5 TB HHD) all Steinberg products crashed EVERYDAY, i found Sonar waaaaaaaaayy to complicated (too many options for very simple process, spending 2 hours trying to fix the damn snap thing is frustrating heheh)
I gave Ableton Live a shot and i quite like, version 8 is VERY VERY good, its workflow is second to no one...
But Logic 8 is the winner in my studio, i installed OSX 10.5.2 on dual partition and everything is working just fine, so no need to get a mac....

I like ableton..
But 100% stable, don´t exist...
The secret imo is a Clean OS install..remove unused components, and dont install desnecessary softwares...
If you wanna install many apps, make a Dual Boot, and use one just for music production...
